Best opening live songs and versions
« on: October 10, 2017, 02:58:37 PM »
Ride across the river
Once upon the time in the west
Calling elvis
Down to the waterline
What are the others left?

My choice is "ride across"
There were many magnific live gigs: american tour, israel, and sidney

I would agree with your list and add another two:

Ride Across the River
Once Upon the Time in the West
Calling Elvis
Down to the Waterline
Darling Pretty
Border Reiver

Probably choose RATR overall too.  Too many great versions to choose from.

Atlanta
Milwaukee
Edinburgh 29.12.85 (really long version)
NYC 03.10.85
Toronto 28.07.85
San Antonio

A bit mad that in about 15 years of Dire Straits there were only ever four opening songs.   With the exception of charity shows . WoL was a good opener

I'm pretty sure this topic has been discussed many times before, but anyway :think
It's really hard to beat "Border Reiver" as an opener both for tour and an album.

I'll never forget hearing those snippets of Border Reiver before the release.
It is the perfect opener for the album and for a show indeed.
And she's sitting in her Lusso, in the early morning sun.

It was on the Tracker I'm sure.  Perhaps no seeders.

Calling Elvis. I'll never forget it. Mark walking onto the stage, blue shirt on, the Les Paul shining through... and Calling Elvis. First time I saw him live. Nothing can beat it.

When was it? By 2001. Because he played the Pensa-suhr for this song.

@crimmer: yes WOL at mandela was one their best gigs. I believe they applied the same arrangement as Sidney 86.

He opened his STP tour with Calling Elvis too in Argentina.
I believe DS gigs were much better than Mark's
