So, some of you want to say that Mark can't play some of his songs anymore?

He can play everything but not all of them properly.
well, that is the point actually, he CAN play if he wants, the only question is what he wants to play.

As you look around this room tonight
Settle in your seat and dim the lights
Do you want my blood, do you want my tears
What do you want
What do you want from me
Should I sing until I can't sing any more
Play these strings until my fingers are raw
You're so hard to please
What do you want from me

That is why I enjoy Pink Floyd as well.

These verses explain what I think when it comes to this issue.
If you have got your own vision what is the PROPER play why don't you just take a guitar and play it or practice it yourself - until your fingers get raw. What do you want from Mark?
Do you respect your own guitar talent?

You answered yourself. Better that you don't listen to me playing the guitar. But I have a strong excuse, I'm NOT Mark Knopfler, I have not his talent.

The only thing I ask him is to keep the dream on as long as he can.

Some think Mark is older now and cannot play guitar as fast anymore...

I rather wonder if possibly modern stage lights have to do with it: these are mostly LEDs and do not cause much heat - the reason Mark does not need the headband anymore. Me for sure cannot play really fast with cold fingers !!

In the studio everything still sounds very fluent to me, much more than on some live recordings from recent tours. And maybe Mark avoids those fancy licks in the studio, too,  as they might not be reproducable for him under non-optimum stage conditions ..? Just a thought  :think

Interesting.  On a lot of the warmer shows (according to Guy's diary) his playing generally seem more fluid to me... :think
