Secondary Waltz (Mark Knopfler) (3.43)

LYRICS

The school Christmas party is coming
We ain’t doing rugby no more
MacIntyre’s teaching us waltzing
out on the gymnasium floor
out on the gymnasium floor
MacIntyre’s out of the army
You’ll be slippered if you get it wrong
And MacIntyre’s din
booms loud in the gym
and we’ve only got our little shorts on
We’ve only got our little shorts on

And it’s one, two, three, two, two –
we’re all a disgrace
MacIntyre tore us apart
And we danced with ourselves
when he yelled ‘Find a space!’
waltzing with fear in our hearts
waltzing with fear in our hearts

Comes the day of the final manoeuvres
All of our heads are awhirl
It’s getting much closer to D-day
This time we’re going to do it with girls
This time we’re going to do it with girls
In the arena the ladies were waiting
a 12 year-old partner to guide
Some matches were fixed
the rest of us mixed
and a fat girl got left at the side
A fat girl got left at the side

And it’s one, two, three, two, two –
we’re all a disgrace
MacIntyre tore us apart
And we danced with ourselves
when we’d all found a space
waltzing with fear in our hearts
waltzing with fear in our hearts

When you come to my fights
and I’m under the lights
and you see that my footwork is false
don’t count me out
at the start of the bout
I’m just doing the Secondary Waltz
doing the Secondary Waltz

I, like a few members on here were lucky to hear a preview of this tune in full at Hay-on-Wye on the 3rd June 2007 before the album was released on the 17th September...

Can't stop giggling throughout this fabulous song!!

This comical tune still makes me laugh - Oh Hay-on-Wye such a distant memory now.... :'(

The first draft sounded completely different.
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

Aah! Kill To Get Crimson. Back in those years when he took care about making a good record with a good original title and a very good cover. And it's a very good album, even if you like it or not..  ;)

Thinking about that album and the 2008 tour is pure bliss for me. Although there is that one flaw connected to it: I still cannot listen to In The Sky in a relaxed mood as it starts to ramble in my mind what it is about. Still. So many good songs on it, recorded in an excellent and very intimate, phantastic sounding way. Gosh! I might give it a try tonight. Would be my first encounter with MK music since late 2019..

It wasn't one of my favourites for a long time, but I began to give it more listening time fairly recently and now it's in my top three MK albums!   :)

I know doesn't it just!

I remember being first in the queue to go in to the show at Hay, and Guy came over for a chat and signed my GH tour programme....

KTGC is without doubt one of MKs stronger albums and is a constant favourite on the turntable.....
