You can say that Mark's slide playing doesn't do it for you. But, calling him a very poor slide player is simply absurd.

Thanks for having the courage to say it.

The overbearing and disrespectful words with which some here judge Mark and Guy are hard to bear anymore.

Of course!

In the Spanish city fans group we have and old saying, "even MK's farts smell like roses"

It's a saying that never fails.

By the way You can't tell me what I can say!!

I repeat..

Mk slide playing is very very poor baby or vary lazy, you choose.

Take a listen to Bonnie Raitt, Sonny Landreth, Rory Gallagher etc etc, that's slide playing.

Perhaps Tracker is my favourite album BECAUSE of the slide guitar, not in spite of it.   A great part of the album has songs played on slide guitar - Mighty Man, Lights of Taormina, etc and I like it very much, even though to some it is viewed as pretty poor playing. I'm certainly no expert on slide guitar, but if I enjoy it that's all that matters to me!   ;)

Exactly.

jbaent It all depends on the approach. Such comparisons and tones of expression do not serve anything

Totally valid opinion.

The more slide the better.

Also keep in mind that MK is left handed and to be better at doing vibratos over three strings at the same time is completely different than playing slide.

I'm a slide guitarist (right handed) myself so I'm only half biased. I couldn't play slide with my right hand even if I wanted to.

World famous slide guitarists probably play it the way they usually prefer (left/right).

And still he plays better slide then 98% of the world's gitarists. Also, his feeling and tone are, as with his normal playing, one of a kind

I have to disagree with you. It's probably the contrary, a 98% of slide guitarist plays better slide than MK. About guitarist that are not specialist slide players, MK doesn't play better than a 98%, if at all, plays better than any other...

I did not compare to slide guitar players but to players in general. And you cannot disagree with the feel and tone

I agree with the feeling and tone partially. He has its own and is up to any fan to consider if its is better than Gilmour's or Clapton's... It's not an absolute truth.

But Gilmour or Clapton slide is far better than Mk, for example.

And some are better in this or that.

MK is very good at fingerpicking, good or decent with a pic, and not very good (quite poor in my opinion) with the slide.

Others are better with slide, others with the pic.

No way MK plays better slide than the 98percent of professional guitar players :-p

I agree with Jbaent
of course music is not a competition/sport etc..., but when you think "slide player" it's obvious that MK si not the first one that cames to mind
Ry Cooder, Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Ben Harper, they are the names I immediately think when I think to "slide players" (Sonny Landreth has very good technique, but I do'nt like him, he is too technical, not enough soulful for me, but that's only my opinion of course)

the point is not to judge musicians, but is to have an "objective" point of view when you look at the whole rock history so to say.
It's like if you said : MK is the best wah-guitar player because he used one on it never rains, wag the dog and early bird. of course if you have to name a famous wah-guitar player, MK is not the one. the same for slide.

when I think to "fingerpicking on electric", MK is the first one that cames to mind, followed by Chet Atkins and Ry Cooder, but also Robbie Krieger.
And now, many guitarists plays both pick and fingers (Clapton, Bonamassa, etc...) while during the 80s, MK was mainly the only one (among famous popular guitarists)

Val's opinion is another thing, it's about personnal taste, not about "critical view" so to say. Saying you like something is not contradictory with saying it's poor, or it's not the best, etc...
I am always atohnished by the lack of objective point of view by some people.
DS/MK is my personnal favoriste artist, but it's not a reason to rate them/him as "genius, best, etc..."
On the contary they are many artists I don't like, but I would rate as milestones in music history

So, Val's opinion is totally compatible with Jbaent's one : Val talks about what she likes, and Jbaent about how he rates Mark's slide playing
