Exactly.  Worthy though his music is, I doubt he would have got a record deal these days.  Basil is a great song, best on Tracker for me, but every song on the first album was better.  If it wasn't for the name and the established fanbase then what would sales be...

Omg, you read my mind! I was writing about being in the right place at the right moment, haha. MK is the perfect example of that. But of course it wasn't just the pure luck, he worked hard to do it all. And I still think that "Beryl" IS the Sultans of 2010s (just give it another 30 years).

I do see your point and I agree with you, but that doesn't change the fact that I, personally, enjoy the solo material far more than DS material, with a few exceptions, of course.   As I said previously, my playlist is 95% solo, but more and more I find myself skipping some of the DS songs, unless they are played live, as inthe case of TR and R&J for example.

Val, that's because we grow old like MK, and our tastes had changed as well, in some cases fasters than others.

People who abandoned MK in his solo career would listen to DS but never MK solo records. People that continued following him and learnt not to expect that DS style songs, but learnt to enjoy the nowadays MK songs, would rather listen to the solo records as they fut better with the MK we keep following that the one from DS which is gone long ago some would say, for good.

you would find more people enjoy to Brothers in Arms song of course - while I would think again between, just for an example, After the Beanstalk  you know, "a hen can lay a golden egg but she still can't sing, well the hen's alright but the harp is everything,... well the harp's worth more than any fortune and fame... Brilliant.
