DS songs played with different guitars

I open this topic to talk about DS songs performed with different guitars.

Such as in SOS he played with the Fender Strato, Schecter Strato, MK1, other Fenders. Differnt colours and sounds
We all have got our fauvorite guitars

For example, Ride across the river was played with the Shecter Sunburst Dream Machine, and the Suhr R Custom (the one in Sidney 86)
And, for me the song sounds better with the Shecter Sunburst..

The Pensa Suhr R was played at Australia/new zeland leg.
I prefer the Pensa sound for this sound.
"Ride accross" was played very different at the end of the BIA tour

There are certain song that have never been played with other guitar than the one played in studio. I would say "romeo and juliet" the first part

Walk of life mainly was played with the red schester telecaster, and a white fender.

I agree to an certain extent, but the solos became more extended later in the tour and the difference is negligible on audience recordings anyway.

Also, we must remember that there are many other things that effect the way a guitar sounds.  Amps can have a big influence on how a guitar sounds, for example.

Just compare wembley concerts with  any Oceania gigs
Amps and effects matter. Sidney sound had a different pitch
Song solos are diferent
There were many "song transformations" from studio versions to live versions.
And between live ones.
TOL, SOS, Sor far, and any others

Also, we must remember that there are many other things that effect the way a guitar sounds.  Amps can have a big influence on how a guitar sounds, for example.

I agree with dmg, the difference in sound comes more from the rig (amps & effects) rather than the guitar.
The difference from the guitar exists, but is very subtle, even more when you compare 2 models of the same guitar (2 strats or 2 LP for example)

For example, if someone says “I prefer the TR tone from the OES tour because I prefer the Pensa over the Schecter, I think it’s more accurate to say “I prefer the TR tone from the OES tour because I prefer the sound coming from the Soldano and Zoom effects rather than the Mesa Boogie"

There is far more difference in the tone on TOL between Alchemy and wembley 85 (same guitar) than between Sultans and TOL on Alchemy (different guitars)

Other example: in 2005 Mark started to play TR on the sig strat, and later switched to the pensa MKII. The tone is not THAT different.

I think that if Mark chose to change guitars during a tour, it’s not mainly for the sound but rather for the neck playability, the gear avalaible, or the tunning change (for example solid rock / two young lovers in 85/86)

1/ The studio version of Romeo and Juliet has been likely played on the National Tricone, not the style O. (although very similar)

you are right, with the exception of the CA & friends gig which was not during a DS tour, all other live versions have been played on the same guitar as the one used in studio

There are certain song that have never been played with other guitar than the one played in studio.

Almost all songs that have been played only on the tour next to the album release, have been played on the same guitar as in studio :

- Lady writer, Southbound again, Eastbound train, Follow me home
(although played on both strats, but we can say it was the “same strat”)

- Six blade knife if we except the only time in Split 85

- Skeateway : all versions played on the red schecter strat

- Industrial disease : all versions played on the Erlewine

- Love over gold : all versions played on acoustic Gibson CA

- The man’s too strong : acoustic part played with pick on Ovation Adamas both in studio and live, although the National slide part wasn’t played live of course

- Fade to black : both studio and live versions played on the Gibson Super 400

- Heavy Fuel : both studio and live versions played on the Pensa MKI



The thread title is about “DS songs” but we can also list solo songs :

- Darling Pretty, Imelda, No can Do, Rüdiger, Speedway At Nazareth, Junkie Doll, Hill Farmer blues: all songs played both studio and live on the 58 LP (and first part of speedway on martin in 2001)
- I’m the fool : both studio and live versions played on the 54 strat
- Done with Bonaparte : both studio and live versions played on the national (although the studio lead part on strat has never been played live)
- Gravy train : both studio and live versions played on the pensa MKI
- Vic and Ray: both studio and live versions played on the black pensa
- Golden heart : hard to say. the studio version could be the pensa like live, but the official video clip shows the red schecter strat
- Wag the dog :  both studio and live versions played on the ES335 (rhythm part)
- Why aye man : not sure. I think there have been different LP in 2005 and 2008 ?
- Boom like that : both studio and live versions played on the Danelectro silvertone, although the lead part was played on the 58 LP in studio

- Let it all go : was the song played on the white strat like live ? we will never know for sure, but the fact that he used this particular guitar for the song live could be a clue
EDIT : I found it again. the studio version was played on the 54 "jurassic" strat

- Redbud tree : both studio and live versions played on the sig strat


I might have forgotten some…


As for NHBs song, I think that all songs have been played on different guitars between 90 and 99


And the National used on recent tours (since 2008 if memory serves) is a reissue, not the original one, so actually a "different" guitar from the one used in studio

On the contrary, we could list all songs that have NEVER been played live with the guitar used in studio :

- Water of love : National Tricone
- Tunnel of love : schecter strat solen
- Romeo and Juliet : it depends if we count the TV playback…
- Telegraph road : the intro is also likely the Tricone….
- It never rains : hard to say. No video exists from late 82, and we don’t know the guitar used in studio
- So far away : although the Shur Custom was played live on RATR and Dylan’s songs, it never used on SFA
- One world : Jask Sonni’s foam green strat
- Calling Elvis : I always wondered why the video clip shows the white strat instead of the Pensa MKI. Was it only for image or was it really the guitar used ?
- The bug : idem. The clip shows the red schecter strat, and it was avalaible on the OES tour, but he chose the white strat instead…
- On every street : according to MK guitar style book, the outro is played on the 61 strat in studio
- You and your friend : 84 LP with hors phase PU
- Je suis désolé : acoustic guitar
- 5:15 am : 58 LP (live it was the sig strat)
- Trawlerman song : 58 LP (live it was the 54 strat)
- Song for Sonny Liston : Eko 700
