I was 17 at the time and my best friend and i were mad on guitars and were forming a band which turned out to be a duo as there didnt seem to be as many musicians about in those days as there are now. It seems every kid plays guitar these days! We were both in awe of this new sound and expert guitar playing. It was a new style and also a new genre that Mk had created. His voice was perfect too - nothing flashy, sweet or clean - just gritty and plain but in keeping with the music - it complemented it perfectly. We tried to emulate it but without the advantage of youtube or the internet there was very little video around that we could study. When we found they were performing at my local Uni in my hometown on the 4th November 1978 we were overjoyed. It is a perfect venue that holds about 600/700 standing only. We made our way to the front in fron of Mk (literally a few feet away from him) and as we knew the album inside out and the rest of the folk there were students we enjoyed every single minute. To hear the sound of the album in a live setting was one heck of an unforgettable occasion. And there were times I would stand and watch in total fascination as he played that guitar - he was a natural. A few months later they were headlinging their own national tour and the rest is history.
