Thanks, Val, your comment makes it a lot clearer to me. Do you think "picking up the ball and .... " can not only refer to the career but also to (serious) relationships. In the sense of: Later on i tried it more seriously with relationships?

I guess we'll never know but my guess is that it was a training school for nurses where men didn't stay.

I thought that it referred to a brothel. The old lady being the madam and the "two brunetts and a blonde".

I don't think so, because it says "It almost seemed like a knocking shop", which means that it isn't one.

No Shai, exactly that's the point and that is the fun - this house seemed almost like a "knocking shop", because of this moment when the landlady and the other girls came out of their rooms to see who was there (with his leathercoat on).. I think these lines must be one of the funniest ones he has ever written. I love them. Could be from a movie, really great picture!

I guess MK is not there and was "searching" here - I think he decided to say OK, she wrote me this letter, now let's be polite and see her...

I remember pretty well times when schoolmates of mine started studying all over Germany and were only at home in our hometown three times a year, and you had to keep track of where everyone was living now - and I was in Hamburg and one day I met a girl from my schooltimes at the subway coincidentally, it was funny to see her there, had not know about the stations her life had taken until she turned up there.. So I guess London as the Big City was of course a place where many other people from the past might appear - I only think about the "childlike hand" because I think that is pretty precise and decided.. it gives the only detail about the lady.. could be a reference to school times and old schoolmates, female ones..

Yes

This means it's the last song in the set then!

Me too.

I was just before the release of Tracker 3 days in Edinburgh with some friends.
As soon as I heard the chorus it reminded me directly of the time there.
The flair, the castles, the bars and whiskys...
 ;D ;D ;D

Laughs and Jokes is the perfect opener and Oklahoma ponies really the perfect closer...

It just occured to how beatifully "no lights on the stairs" works as a metaphor: They're young and eager, and there's a steep climb in front of them, but where exactly they're heading they can't tell, it's all in the dark, with just a couple of enlightened moments every now and then.

Mark surely is as good with words as he is with chords and guitars.

As per the dvd explanation from the man himself the lights were controlled by a 'timer' which they would press but they only had a limited time to get up the stairs and into their room!!

But it works as a metaphor, too. At least for me.  :hmm

Have I told you that the intro and rhythm backbone through out reminded me of Take Five? Nice lyrics, nice build up but a bit repetitive.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.
