First of all he writes his songs about books, now authors!  What next, a song about Harper Collins?  ::)

Love that idea. And surely, these days, the song would be simply called "Harper". Maybe that's even going to be the title of the next album. Featuring Kim Wilson all the way through.  ;)

Yes, about Beryl Booker - I found her, too, on Wikipedia last night. And it is somehow strange/funny that her family name is BOOKER, but I think the tobacco line in the lyrics make it pretty clear that Mark means Beryl Bainbridge with this song... LE

....and the fact that she was overlooked for The Booker Prize, until after her death.

Yes, sure, the song's about Beryl Bainbridge, no doubt. I just thought that Mark might have been aware of Beryl Booker, too, and all those other B&Bs. I think he likes it when his lyrics ring different bells.

Just had to give it another listen (I'll have to stop soon so I don't ruin the first album listening session). And since I don't know a thing about recording technology, I wondered if anybody had anything to say about how his voice was recorded here. To me, it almost sounds as if it had been recorded all at once, together with the instruments, in one room. Like Gator Blood, kind of. Except for the lead guitar, which is somehow up there in the sky, or "on another level", if you will. Beryl up there, angelic, and the rest of us down here, mourning and regretting ...

Lots of old amiters posting today - some of which haven't been around for a while - it's great to see you all, but on the other hand, it is sad somehow to see you not in "normal" times.. :-) just a little thought of me, please don't feel offended!

To be fair Mark had a song about a Lady Writer already back in 1978/1979, it was called... now wait.. Lady Writer.  I

Another question that popped up after the umpfteenth listen: There is a piano in the intro, right? I cannot detect it throughout the rest of the recording, only that keyboard part... As Jim was not at the sessions at all, Guy played everything with keys, right?

from http://www.mark-knopfler-news.co.uk/

"BERYL: The first single from Mark's forth-coming album, Tracker, is a song dedicated to Beryl Bainbridge who was one of Britain's leading novelists. Entitled Beryl, the song had it's first official airing today on the Ken Bruce show on BBC Radio 2. Beryl will be available as a digital download. (15/01/15)."

The radio edit (made by guy i suppose) is 2.39 minutes. That means the album version is 3.11 i guess?  :-\

when listen carefully to ( spotify track) the track it ends on 03.07 min, i have the feeling that one is edited too , but for that we have to wait for the album.

We had that feeling also with Redbud Tree  :-\ And now we knew that Guy made an edit... Discovering that the radio version of today is 2.39 isn't giving me hope for a longer album version then.
