Great tune....

Cool playing and lots of licks and electric lovliness....

Lyrically?  Erm....yeah - the song is all a bit "Meh" for me....uninspiring and quite frankly dull.....a bit "Dont you get it".....

One of the things I love about MK's tunes is the ability to sing along in the car or on headphones.....but there is NO way im singing a song which mentions Beryl......!! ;D

Bad. Like it took 5 minutes to write it.

Just like a JJ Cale song :)

Beryl Bainbridge

Beryl Bainbridge was born in Lancashire in November 1934. She wrote her first novel, Harriet Said, during the 1950s, although it was not published until 1972.

She has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times; The Dressmaker (1973); The Bottle Factory Outing (1974), which won the Guardian Fiction Prize; An Awfully Big Adventure (1990) which was made into a film in 1995; Every Man For Himself (1996) which won the Whitbread Novel Award; and Master Georgie (1998) which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for fiction).

Beryl Bainbridge was awarded a DBE in 2000, and later died in London in 2010. A one-off award, the Man Booker Best of Beryl, was created in her honour to celebrate her five shortlisted novels.

Dead in a grave, Redbud Tree, shelter me. Seems like theme for Mark to choose dark songs for his singles nowadays, hehe.

Back to the old days with the sound of the Strat, looks like a tribute song to JJ Cale, and the organ reminds me the one on "Let's see you", anyway great song and can't wait to listen to the whole album.
If I realised that the chances were slim,
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in

To me, the sound of the strat on Beryl is very similar to Bo Walton's song: miss you bad. Knopfler plays the guitar there and the sound and even the rhythm are very similar, imo

Seems that it's offline on Spotify. At 06.00 AM this morning I was able to listen to it, now at work, it seems offline.  My first impression of the song:  A bit of JJ Cale, a bit of the first Straits-album...  in a way 'typical MK'.  This kind of fresh Strat-sound combined with an uptempo beat, it was a long time ago he did something like that!

Oh, DogSwede put it on YouTube I see.. Well, this time, I have to say thank you very much - and it is extremely sounding like JJ and has some Punish The Monkey touch - and yes, the double vocals (which is very much JJ style) fits well to MK..
And I like the beginning and the ending very much!

Satisfied!

The lyrics are indeed somewhat weak. I mean, not sure if Beryl cared for the Booker, or does a real writer really care for any prices? Is Philip Roth really sad that he hasn't got the Nobel Prize? So the big drama is that she was nominated 5 times and never got him? And that's enough for getting a song written by Mark.. maybe I have a chance, too - because my bike has a flat tyre the third time this month....  ;D ;D

Maybe this was the song that needed the drums in so early as Guy told in his first(?) diary entry.

The solo melody has something from Behind With The Rent, or what do you think?

Love the 'Sulanesque' intro, but the song could have done without that annoying chugging organ sound.
But great to hear the faster tempo & of course the delicious Strat :-)
And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles.
