" is there a way to tell if such a disc is official? Especially with the "acetates". "
The STP promo I listed is no acetate but a silver pressed CD, but I get your point. To be honest, I have no idea how to say if a promo is originally released by the record company. On the other hand, I think it would be strange to release fake promos as I doubt that there would be really a market for that. When someone releases a fake promo, the only obvious reason for me would be to make money out of it. And since the STP promo I listed is very hard to find, I can only assume it is an official promo released in small quantaties. If it was released to make money out of it, I would expect that we could find it very easily on Ebay for example. When it comes to acetates promos, it is a different case I think as everybody can burn a CD-R and make a print on the CD with a printer. I would not know how to identify a CDR promo as official or fake. Nowadays, it seems more and more acetates are made, way cheaper compared to the silver pressed ones which are made with injection moulding and requires a relative expensive mould to start with.
