I find Sellers far more hilarious in The party, one of my other fav movies 

his indian accent makes me laughing every time

an every time I heard Ravi Shankar's introduction at the concert for Bangladesh, I immediately think at Peter Sellers in The party :

"if you like the tunning so much, I think you will appreciate  the playing more" 

the greatest misunderstanding from the crowd in rock history

Being serious, I do love the original Blake Edwards Pink Panther films with Peter Sellars and Herbert Lom.  Indeed Lom is one of my favourite actors.  So underrated.

I do, of course, accept the many points made here - context is important to find something funny, the problems of translation, cultural differences and so on. Thank you, jf, for providing a bit of background. My French is pretty basic, I'm afraid. I once bought "Jacques Brel - Une Vie" by Olivier Todd and it has been struggle, as I can only manage it in fits and starts.
