DS1984 you are right that there was an economy factor, but the "artistic" aim changed also : trying to create whole pieces of art, "albums" composed by several pieces that fit together, while the 50ies and early 60ies were more based on "individual" songs so to say

sorry to bring back this off topic subject again, but I am currently reading the french version of "beatles complete recordings, all songs explained in details" and I found this quote that suits exactly what I meant :

in 1963, LPs don't have real homogeneity yet. It is mostly a compilation of tracks. George Martin confirms :"we were recording singles, and those that weren't released ended up on an album. the 2nd album has been done in this way"
