New release of Local Hero from Great North Run

As promised, my recording of the brilliant broadcast that the great BBC2 made of the perfomance of the Great North Run hymne by the geordie Mark Knopfler

Is not so good as the "Chase and Status" perfomance which are very important and significant for the city and the run, but close to the one by Sting and Jimmy Nail, another couple of geordies.

From what I could make out, through all the talking over it, it sounded almost like Mark was just playing fills between the lead sax;  his guitar was near inaudible.

I saw this yesterday and Sting with Jimmy Nail got about 5 minutes full uninterrupted coverage.

From what I can deduce from various coverage, including this "full coverage"     is that the main part of the show was the "story" of Newcastle and the GNR.  I don't think MKs performance was part of it and was something that happened before the official show started.  I may be wrong - I often am, but this doesn't account for the abysmally short clip! 

Maybe someone who was actually there can shed more light on this?

I've got to say from what I saw that Tim Healy did a wonderful job.

Yeah, if you would ask Mark he would probably say that it was just a little gesture without too much meaning apart from the Geordie thing and that it definitely does not deserve seven pages at any fan forum!

I don't think he's really played a genuinely great version since 2002.  The last great one was Beaulieu 2002 and it makes recent ones sound pretty amateur.

I agree that the version at the GNR was very disappointing, especially after having heard so many good versions on the last tour, either with Nigel or without him and I've listened to many that I didn't attend that were great too!    Beaulieu was OK, but I liked 2013 versions much more - sorry!

yep the 2013 versions were definitely my favourite ones in years too.

Difficult to beat alchemy version imho
Other versions I like very much are 96 ones : no sax but much more improvising in the solo, and amazing tone on the LP. Hamburg is a very good example.
