John Illsley confirmed, via his contact formulary in his website, that Mark Knopfler WILL NOT play with him, but PHIL PALMER.

Seem to remember that Phil came to one of MK's solo shows in Italy?

So probably no bad blood.

And as for Phil pointing out that MK was a dick during the OES era, well,  he was.

Sausages for nothing but other stuff too, infamous Vox magazine article where Phil called Mark an ogre (in the middle of the tour!) being one example.

I've got that somewhere and if I remember he says MK is a wanker as he goes to get in the lift, but it has been 20 years since I read it so I may be somewhere between slightly and totally wrong.

In the quote he says to the journalist "And remember, Mark Knopfler's a..." and the lift closes!

Well, don't know Phil or Mark but based on what is written here, and considering that Phil was an employee of Mark's, in my opinion you have given the wrong person the title.

I'm confused, who are you saying should have the title?

Sorry to be unclear. I just meant that based on what I have read here, Phil doesn't sound like such a sterling character himself!

Just because someone is an employer shouldn't make them exempt from criticism IMO. Throughout history plenty of employers have been arseholes.

Phil plays for many artists, some of them over the years, like with George Michael. Sure he has his character too, but as an employee, you totally depend on your boss, and being honest, Phil is not the only one talking like that about MK during the DS years, Tommy Mandel, Jack Sonni, Chris whitten, Manu Katche... I guess that MK as a boss was, lets say, too demanding.

As you might imagine, (and can see from my last post) this thread is slightly boring now that we know MK will not play with John. But nevertheless, wayaman, you got me with mentioning Chris Whitten.. I never was aware of him saying anything about MK at all, let alone anything negative? Please elaborate!

I read in an article back in 92 that he (Whitten) suffered Mk's anger a few times during the tour because Mk wanted everyone to start or stop playing at the exact microsecond, if not, be ready to suffer the boss anger. Not very relaxing enviroment for a long world tour.
