The Story of the guitar - documentary
« on: May 18, 2014, 12:09:54 PM »
A very interesting documentary film about the beginnings and popularization of the instrument. I guess that almost every Mark Knopfler fan has to appreciate the guitar in some way so I think this film will appeal to many of you.

Mark appears shortly in the first part, he talks about having his first guitar with a picture of Elvis on it.
In the second part he shows his guitar collection and talk about it.

A lot of beautiful players gets mentioned like The Blind Blake who was an influence on Knopfler as well as Hank Marvin who is also interviewed in the film.

Beautiful documentary worth watching.

Part 1 - In the Beginning

Part 2 - Out of the Frying Pan

Part 3
(don't know why it's not on youtube)

Thank you for bringing it up, although we have mentioned it in the past. It is a fine documentary indeed!
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

You can tell from the black bars that this is taken from the recording that our own Val (and Colin!) made.

Thanks Val and Colin!

I remember we talked with knopflerfan about the first strato owned by Hank being a rosewood one, but here Bruce Welch shows a maple one as being the first one in UK, and then given to Hank.
So I must admit I'm not sure
Does someone knows exactly if the "first" Hank's strat was a rosewood or a maple one ?

You're probably right, just my bad memory!   I do have the three parts, pre-youtube, so thanks to you for editing and uploading!    :)

I always thought Hanks first Strat was Rosewood but obviously not!!

Cliff and the Shads first hit 'Move it'

Correct! It was actually two session player's: guitarist - Ernie Shear, along with Frank Clark on bass and they recorded the single 'Move It/Schoolboy Crush with Harry Webb (Cliff Richard)

Hank's first tune played with 'The Drifters' was 'Feelin Fine' & 'Saturday Dance' with 'The Shadows'

Well done for Dusty for bringing this up.....

No problem,  this is important stuff.

So we have discovered the following!
Hank actually mimes plays with a Fender Strat with a maple neck and Not a Rosewood as some of us first thought! therefore the Strat that Mr Welch has was the original strat given to Hank by Harry Webb!!!
