I just checked SFA now and.......

during the calypso part he is singing "that mean old town" (2:19), and during the "rock" part he's singing " newcastle town" (5:52)......

so maybe the bootleg is really from newcatsle, and really from october.... ???

Let me tell you a story. It has nothing directly to do with MK or DS but may throw some light on all this.

It was many years ago and I forget some of the details and maybe the exact chronology but it went something like this. I was looking to get mrs twm any unusual item for her birthday and was asking around at the local record fair. One of the dealers said he had something of interest but it was in Newcastle. I said I'd come across some time and, soon, an arrangement was made. I took my elder son with me and, for some reason that I disremember, I wanted to go the terminal building at Newcastle Airport on the way. There, my son noticed one of his favourite bands checking in. They had played in Newcastle, at a fairly small venue, the night before and he managed to get some autographs. Off we went into town and I got the item I was after. We mentioned seeing this band at the airport and this guy said he had recorded the show. My son was interested in getting a copy but the dealer was reluctant. He asked what my son had in exchange and I reminded my son that he had made a decent recording of a Dylan show in Glasgow (another story in itself) and they agreed to exchange cassette recordings. The  guy said he recorded just about anyone and everyone  who was performing in Newcastle. Later, I got a call from a friend saying they'd bought a Dylan bootleg LP and they could hear my son's voice on it asking the time. He was checking, so that he turned the cassette at the right time. Anyway, I tackled this dealer the next time I saw him. He gave me a few copies of the bootleg, saying that he exchanged cassette recordings with another contact who sometimes had bootleg LPs made and that's what had happened. This was, I think, in 1990, close enough in time to the concert you're talking about.

Just a thought!

Thanks JF for checking the recording!  I think it would be very unlogical if MK mentions Newcastle in a song while playing in Egham. So, I now really think the recording has to be from Newcastle and will change it on my site soon.

Once I have my collection back at home, I will check the DSIS newsletters from 1989 again to see what was actually written.

Pottel, I have no recallection whatsoever. At that time, my son was into those Midlands bands like The Wonderstuff, PWEI and so on. Ii wasn't either of those but I think it was a band like that. Definitely not DS, anyway. I'd ask my son but he's tied up with other things at the moment.

"He also says in the comments about this recording in his site that MK sings "Here I am again in this Egham town"

I just checked my site, but that is not what I mentioned there (and I did not edit anything the past years on that recording), don't know why you think so? Sure you got that line from my site? I don't have the recording at hand now, but maybe MK reveals the town indeed during So far Away. I really wonder which city he mentions, can anyone check please?

Jeroen

Dear Jeroen, I recall reading that from you, I thought that it was in you site, maybe it was in an old post in TR, maybe I asked you by mail and you answered that, honestly cant recall it, but I am pretty sure I read that from you.

About the DSIS letter, in internet I can find one from December 88 and the next one is from August 1990, sorry I cant help more.

Than again:

Little Joanne Gillespie is the inspiration behind Brave Hearts. The 11-year-old Teesside girl turned the tragic story of her battle against a recurrent brain tumour into a diary back in 1989.
Robin Alexander, a member of Hexham Round Table, was so moved he launched an appeal to help children with similar stories.
The fundraising drive ended with Dire Straits headlining a gala charity dinner at the famous old Newcastle Mayfair ballroom venue
Leaving nothing to interfere,

strange that Uniondale 11th october 85 is not in his list

although David Sanborn played sax on TOL and WWE, Chris was here, as Mark introduced him during TOL

I have seen that Chris White site before, and I have my doubts if that info was not taken from the internet somewhere instead of being taken from a real personal diary from Chris himself. So, I would not take it all too serious, after all it is a Chris White FAN SITE.

I also recall reading about the Egham concert in the DSIS newsletter, but someone from the DS band said that in 1989 there were two charity concerts, I cant remember if it was Terry Williams, Alan Clark or John Illsley, but I read it somewhere...
