It was Jerry Wexler's idea to ask Knopfler for Slow Train Coming:

part 1:
part 2:
part 3:

Always thought the iniative/idea came from Dylan himself, when you read alot of articles why Knopfler was asked. This interview makes clear that was not the case.

I remember sitting through the whole of that show on TV purely for that small glimpse of MK!    Seeing him perform was so precious in those days.    :)

Thanks for the clip, Pottel.

One thing often leads to another!  ;D

Btw Vince Gill is an amazing guitarplayer. His Oklahoma Borderline solo is awesome:

I have that CMA awards on vhs somewhere,  would be about 94?

Funny seeing MK playing through that cheap Crate amp - I have one of those!

Can't remember seeing that strat before either?

Nice one Pottel!
Great song, smooth solo and Mark looks typically pre-solo period!

BTW, does anyone know what guitar that is?

never seen it before

looks like a pensa-shur-schecter strat

pesna-shur for the headstock
schecter for strat-look and potis

most likely borrowed from Gill's gear, or maybe from TV staff ?

Exactly the same here, Val.. a friend recorded it from some pay-tv-station back then if I remember correctly, gave me the vhs and I was searching and searching directly the next day after it was broadcasted in Germany...

Wexler also states it, on his fine autobiography Rhythm and the blues on page 292. He had just come off recording Communique and thought that it would help Dylan put the new songs  together. Dylan's answer was in the lines "Mark does me better than anybody", so he must have heard of him. From other sources I remember reading that Dylan had seen DS live and the suggestion was mutual, but anyway. Wexler, although he admitted that DS was his most lucrative production after the Atlantic years, he doesn't share many details from his days with DS, maybe a page total in all the book, and most of it while referring to other incidents, like Dylan...

As for the videos, thanks Pottel & Guitarman! Amazing videos that I haven't seen before! Vince is a maestro of the guitar. No wonder MK brought him in during "The bug"  sessions. His style is fluent and unique and totally suits the song. (which regardless, is one of my least favorites from OES)

I had seen  It might get loud and it was a big disappointment to me. I expected more, both information wise, and playing. We have three amazing players and we just don't hear them play their stuff. Maybe because each one has his different and distinctive style...
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

Yes, this is as I heard about it before. JW (plus BB) produced Communique, JW's coming project was Slow Train Coming, he suggested MK (and Pick Withers) to Dylan, Dylan went to see the band in the Roxy on their first US tour and was impressed...
