It seems as if their long lasting problems are solved, BUT: his friendly and admiring words refer only to their childhood and teenage-years. At least this is my interpretation. Who knows what he is thinking about Mark now.

He seemed to be in a nostalgic mood - looking back at the past wistfully.  They were, indeed, nice words about Mark and I hope they are both on friendlier terms these days.

I've always liked this quote from David from the link below:

Even when I was a student, 18, 19, Mark would come over on his motorbike and I had two acoustic guitars lined up so that we could play and write and practice. We just enjoyed playing together. We did have a very good organic chemistry. Although, I think a lot of good players who

I wonder if Mk will get to know all these nice things David says about him...

Roger Waters and David Gilmour problems were even bigger, and now they are on friendly terms, and they are not family, so, who knows. I

I love reading about all these nice words DK said about MK.  It has to be hard to be a little brother to a big brother who has all the fames and successes.  :(  Has Mark mentioned anything in the same veins about David anywhere? It's time the two brothers come to terms with each other.

Thanks, jbaent and rkd for the quotes. :thumbsup

Some tend to think that people mellow as they get older, so perhaps their relationship is on better terms these days.  However I am always reminded of one of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite books:  "It's like those sticks of rock: bite it all the way down, you'll still read Brighton. That's human nature.

...who taught me both the power of individualism, and a kind of old-school alpha male masculinity that wasn't intuitive at all for me.

I'm sorry if I sound negative, but could the sentence above be interpreted as ironical ? "power of individualism" ? "alpha male" ? Could it be some way to hint that Mark was a tyran ??

I think it's an example of when you can take words out of context.  David says "old school alpha male" and followed on by saying that it wasn't "intuitive at all for me."  This makes me think it was something that he strived to be and that Mark was someone he emulated.

I thought of that too, of course, but I also thought that it could mean "I'm a nice guy, being a dominant alpha male is not my thing... unlike Mark".... of well, I hope I'm wrong !

herlock, that is exactly how I read it.  Mark was "old-school alpha male", and David wasn't.  I see this as recognition that they were differrent, and David is 'calling it as it is'...  Not super positive in itself, but also not necessarily negative, as David is expressing gratitude to the male role models in his life, and this is a very valid and worthy lesson for a kid that may not be so very assertive.  All-in-all, I see this as a positive comment.

It seems to me, an old man sifts out milestone events of his life through a sieve of time and tries to estimate all what is left.
I can understand such state of mind.
And I am not inclined to believe that it's an attempt of peacemaking of him. I think, David has a good sense of time, being an intuitive person, as distinct from his brother, who has mostly a sensory acuity and lives right here right now. They're too different.

I don't know if it is the "french reading", but I have the same feeling as Herlock.*

When I read " power of individualism" and "old-school alpha male", it doesn't sound nice words to me...

and of course, we all know that Mark was a tyran during DS days, it's very well explained in the Oldfield book.

I am not critising this fact, even John Illsley said that it was necessary, in order to lead a band, but it's obvious that David suffered from this, and these words sound more ironic than warm to me, but of course I could be wrong

The fact that english is not my native language doesn't help me to really feel the "hidden senses" of words. And we all know, by posting on a forum, than writing something, without seeing the face or hearing the voice tone  can be misleading...
