I've often wondered just HOW Mark feels he would've improved infidels (as he's mentioned in interviews) if given the chance at the time.
I love the record as it is, one of Dylan's must haves. The sound recording is superb, the sessions capture some brilliant performances with Marks sublime guitar (plus Micks) and Bob in fine singing form on classic esoteric songs.
Sure, there are some AMAZING out takes, such as Foot Of Pride and Blind Willie, and I can imagine if these had been given just a little MK production boost and included, the album would be regarded alongside Blood on the Tracks & Blonde on Blonde. imo
Hey, i`ve got a truffle dog - finally a song the ordinary man can relate too!

I love the rough cuts bootleg, especially :

tell me (wonderful combination between Mark's red schecter (I believe) and gorgeous Mick's slide tone
blind wille mac tell (electric version) :one of best Mick's work IMHO
dark groove  or Don't fly unless it's safe (note sure, but one of those 2 tunes) : I like the "groove" of this tune
I and I : better take than the album version IMHO

I have been involved elsewhere in a discussion about the official release dates for INFIDELS, especially in the United Kingdom and the Unites States. The dates given in reference sources seem to vary. If anyone has any contemporary sources, not only from those two countries but other countries, too, I'd be interested to hear.

Wikipedia only gives one date of release: October 27, 1983.

Allmusic give 1st of November!

All other sources I've checked agree with Wiki though.

Wiki may say 27 October 1983 now but, at one time, it apparently said 1 November, as stated by the All Music website. And you know the way that Wiki works - people amend information all the time.

twm, do the early advance copies have the album as we know it or the previous version?

Also, I know it may sound like gossip, but what ever happen with Sara? Has she remarried, etc?
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

The early advance copies of INFIDELS were the version as released.

However, as I heard the story, recordings (including alternate versions and out-takes from the sessions) were lodged at the copyright office. These began to circulate among collectors early on, too. I believe that dubbing recordings lodged at the copyright office is no longer possible.

As for Sara, little has been heard of her or from her. This may have been part of the divorce settlement. I believe she moved to Hawaii. I have no idea as to her marital status.

On the recently available box-set of all Dylan's "regular" albums (that's 47 discs in all, by the way, including a couple of CDs of "bonus" tracks from the various compilation albums but excluding the Bootleg Series albums), the release date for INFIDELS has reverted to 1 November 1983!

With Sony Music swithering between 27 October and 1 November 1983, dmg, I fear that we never know for sure.

There may perhaps be different dates on different documents in their archive. In another example, an 8 May 1985 press release about EMPIRE BURLESQUE says it will be released in "late May". The official release date is 8 June 1985. Obviously, things changed for that album in a very few weeks.

There may also be a difference between the "shipping date" (which I assume to be the day that copies of the album leave the warehouse) and the "in-store date". An additional complication in the past (probably not at the time that INFIDELS was released) was that, at Columbia Records Santa Maria manufacturing plant in California, retailers (and rack jobbers) could just turn up and buy their stock over the counter.  Irrespective of the official release date, this could affect availability of albums in shops because shipping could be delayed while the over-the-counter orders/sales were fulfilled.

And another little oddity on Dylan album release dates. In this recent box-set, the official release date for THE BASEMENT TAPES is given as 26 June 1975 (page 238 of its booklet), whereas, in a CBS document that is dated 25 June 1975 and headed "New York Newsmongers" (on page 116), it says the album will be issued on 7 July.

Oh what a tangled web they weave!

So let me come back to my original question about INFIDELS: does anyone here have any original reports (that is, reports that are contemporaneous with the album's release) that they might care to share with us? If so, what do they say?

Could be worse and have the difference of a year between release dates in the USA and ROW as per Privateering! ;D
