I ended up spending a good quality time listening to TOL on YT last night.  I love them all !  I think it's Mark's best song and best guitar solo ever. :)

Co-incidently, it was on as background music when I was in Jessops this afternoon.  I remarked to the guy serving me that it was my favourite song and he said that they were listening to DS the other day and reminiscing.

Also co-incidently, I was walking by a local coffee shop this morning when I heard SOS blaring on the radio. So, I did what a good Knopler's fan  would do. I went in to listen to the rest of the song. It made my day !  :)  Never ever heard TOL on radio here.

It wasn't the radio but the shop's own playlist.  Alas, I've never heard TOL on the radio here either!

Never? In the Netherlands there was a radio station who played it ocassionally. And there is every year de top 2000 at an other station.  Its in there too :) no all time hitlist in other countries when nearing 31-12?

In the store where I work they play MK/DS often. Last week I heard the last laugh, what it is, sailing, sultans. In 1 week! Any amiters working at ahold?;D I couldn't stop singing along and having a big smile on my face, every time I hear Knopfler!

Lucky you. Where I live, it's rare to listen even to SoS, BiA, WoL, MfN, YLT, SFA, WW, which are the songs made the greatest impact. I guess the only solo song I've ever listened to in radios was Darling Pretty.

I always thought that radio playlists (except for specila programms) were based only with singles.

TOL was released as a single in many country, so it's not surprising that it has been aired on radios, but the last laugh ?

AFAIK, this song was never released as a single. So it means that sometimes radio broadcast tracks from original albums ?
I believe it's not very usual, but I might be wrong

If I remember correctly, (I think I have it) The last laugh was issued as a 7'' single with wide center for juke boxes. Also another song from STP was issued, but I have to look
http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=179342
Also some promo CD singles from all albums and two from Kill to get crimson.

It is not unusual to hear ONLY LP tracks. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and many more  never issued singles in their home land, but of course they were wildly popular and Stairway to heaven is the most played song in the US radio without being issued as a single even there .
AFAIK? which one is this? Stuck mind>

Come on, it is not funny anymore.

Ah ok thanks for the info vgonis

I know that stairway is the most played song in the US, but I thought it had been released as a single ?
Same for Floyd : I believe that most of their known songs were released as singles : money, us and them, Time, another brick..., wish you were here, etc... No ?

AFAIK is for "as far as I know " sorry for being too lazy to write the whole thing ;D

Led Zeppelin's contract prohibited any UK singles, but atlantic US issued some, before Peter Grant intervened. Stairway was never issued as a single, at least not back then.
Pink Floyd just didn't care to promote single songs, since they thought that they were working on concept albums and seperating them spoilt the overall effect. However on albums such as dark side, the wall and final cut the extrordinary success led to many seperate releases on different countries, some of them are quite collectible. Perhaps the only single they released on purpose was another brock 2, due to their being in dire straits. ;-)
Of course Rogerless floyd issued many singles in order to overcome the issue of Roger.

Come on, it is not funny anymore.

This is a bit off topic but another great live song from OES tour was of course Planet of New Orleans. I remember reading years ago on the TR mailing list that there existed a video clip where was a part of the song recorded at the tour rehearsals and the audio was soundboard. The video was a mix of the band playing and some striptease  ;D
Anyway, I forgot about it and today I came across it on the Youtube! Here it is (NSFW):

Would be great to have the whole song but it's better than nothing I guess.

Maybe a late night TV show, in the nineties? Combining two of the producer's greatest loves...
