I love that song, too. And of course it was great to hear it in Bremen (he he). But I respect if he doesn't play it. The Diamond/Seattle/Kingdom(!) combo from tonight's show with the lovely voice of Ruth Moody really outweighs not hearing a dinosaur song that everyone from us has so many versions from on his hard disk..

I know that Mark has so many new songs & its about what HE wants to play, but I'm surprised that he chooses to drop Sultans rather than Telegraph Road, as that would free up more time in the set. Perhaps he has finally become bored with Sultans.  I will really miss it if it becomes the next permanently retired DS tune. To me, it is more historically important as their "breakthrough" song, & probably the one most "casual fans" still want to hear.
Personally I prefer to keep TR over Sultans (of course I prefer to have both).
TR is the most sophisticated thing he ever wrote... My ultimate favorite with TOL.
Cannot go away, even with this dumb karaoke mode !

Its all been a bit flat for me since the GH tour, i love a lot of his newer songs but i think on the GH tour the mix of DS and solo songs was better, not only that but when he played the older songs he still had fire in his playing. . anyway if it wasnt for the DS songs how many people would know who MK is and be turning out to his gigs? . .  imagine if he had started his career in 1996 and GH was his first album. . would he reach the level of sucess he reached with DS and be filling the arenas?

Dont get me wrong i really love 90% of what MK does.. i expect theres lots and lots of people who are "going home" from his shows less than happy though

BUT. . .Bring on Newcastle!!!  :D

sure he should do what he wants, I was always on his side about the dissolution of the DIRE STRAITS, but into on a night like this, in front of more lovers fans, (Netherlands was the first country where the first album come a success before than all the world) imo Mark as an exception like Range Rover party (where was played also walk of life & money for nothing) had to play SULTANS OF SWING without ifs and buts

I'm pretty surprised that so many at the forum don't miss SOS...........but that's seems to be the situation  ???
I am also disturbed. SOS is a milestone that HAVE TO BE PLAYED.
This being said, it does not mean that other songs like IDUAD and MT are rubbish.
And dmg, I remember you saying (rightfully so) that BIA has been played better in the past (on the night). This is also true of SOS ! Think of Alchemy and live aid, much better than today.
So why one milestone is ok not to be played and not the other ? Ok it is SOS, te one that started it all... But BIA is also a major milestone.
Good question.  There is more scope in SOS for variation and improvisation whereas in BIA I feel the song has become rather boring and sounds weary to me.  Compare recent versions with those from the BIA tour and MK plays and sings with so much feeling in those '85 versions compared to the "talking" lyrics he does now.  He can still do BIA but I would prefer some other DS classic that sounded better.

You know, maybe this is profanity, but I prefer SOS version from The Straits now more than from Mark. And this fact is breaking my heart, really. (

I agree and it breaks my heart too. . He should be raising his game and if anything adding even just 1 or 2 more DS tunes to the set not ditching them

Of course, thats only my opinion

Reading all this SOS moaning I have to say I wish I could hear Mark play a gig without a single DS song - that would be an experience! Never could understand that SOS obsession.
A security guard said it was total foolishness on our part to attend the show in the rain. We laughed and said we were indeed the most foolish folks in the world. --Tee, JTO
