I read Guy's reply to you Ingrid and I must say I was shocked.  You put your point across in a polite manner and all he could manage in reply was an expletive.  He may have apologised, but what sort of person behaves like that in the first place?  He's gone down in my estimations.  I guess life's too short to hold a grudge so best to forgive and forget - move on.

On a more positive note, on listening to the videos I think Ian Thomas is settling in nicely, especially making his mark on R&J.  Crows has evolved a bit too since last year and sounds much better now  Mark playing some licks during the lyrics thereby building up the song when it felt a bit flat last year until the final solo.

Can't wait until tomorrows set list then and we'll see just how much it will change...

We have had mailconversation and I do understand him and he understands me. I can imagine it now all forgiven now to both sides

I'm just gonna say that judging by the videos I've been watching on youtube, Knopfler and band have been on fire.... So great seeing Knopfler with renewed energy... he's looking well and performing superbly. I'm really not into negativity as with the catalogue as extensive as Knopfler's it would be impossible to please everyone.

It's the first show and a few songs will get chopped and changed around no doubt.....

I for one am extremely pleased with this first concert.... Sultans and Telegraph Rd  are being played with extra energy... Yon Two Crows and Hillfarmer's Blues are astonishingly good... BIA and R&J are beautiful and all the others sound superb

Anyone who things he can't play songs like Sultans anymore honestly need to go and get checked out :P

Long Live Knopfler...... Incredible
Fordie

A long time ago came a man on the track......

We use abbreviations like SFA sometimes because we name so many songs in one post that we would get sore fingers.  Also, I'm lazy and slow at typing okay! ;)

FYI SFA is So Far Away, but I guess you know now!  If anyone gets stuck, just ask and don't feel silly because we don't all use abbreviations all the time.  I only know because I use them to save favourite versions on my computer.

Congratulations on 1000 posts Fieneke.  You're a Romeo now!

we pay shitloads of money to go watch him and buy his cd's and sticks, and even though we all love him, even when he farts the telephone book live on stage, we are allowed to post our dissapointment, i see no issue with that.
amen to that, surely thats the point of this forum. If you feel MK is above criticism then thats a bit weird.

So, I am new to forums (period), but I do like the independent vibe of AMIT.  So this means that we don't agree on many things (even on our appreciation of MK songs, ...for example, I really like "The Car was the One", and many AMITers DON'T like it)... I get that we all have different opinions.  Glad we can voice our opinions here.  Really!!

And we know that we like and respect each other.  I've learned TONS since I've joined, and I am happy to belong to this group of folks who, regardless of some immediate disagreement, REALLY, REALLY love Mark's music!!!   :wave

Hi to all of you!

I am new to this board and I need little help.

As I see on videoclips from first show, there are 7 people on the stage except Mark Knopfler. If I am not mistaken, they are:

1. Guy Fletcher
2. Richard Bennett
3. John McCusker
4. Glenn Worf
5. Jim Cox
6. Ian Thomas
7. ???

Can you tell me who is number 7 and on what instrument is he playing?

Thank you in advance!

That would be Mike McGoldrick.

Thank you for your answer, Maxx!

I am from Sofia, Bulgaria. We will see Mark Knopfler on monday (29 April) for second time after his concert here in 2008.
I will try to post here some impressions and photos from the show.

Pottel, I am a HUGE freedom of speech fanatic. If you know French philosopher Voltaire: "I hate your ideas, but I will fight to death for you to be able to express them". I never said that anyone should not be allowed to express his or her disappointement, nor did I say that Mark was above criticisim. I merely pointed out that jumping at Guy's jugular on the very night of the very first show, from people who did not even attend the show, some even claming to represent 90% of fans without evidence whatsoever, whereras the tour has yet to developp, was excessive and counterproductive. Ingrid herself seems to agree with me on that now, as she apologized to Guy in a very classy manner...

A few criticisms after watching the vids, so that you see that I am also capable of complaining :)

1) TR is still rather slow and in "Karaoke mode" after "rolling river". This has now been the same pattern since 2008. I had high hopes for a come back of the 2005 style, but I don't believe it will change now. Still I find it slightly better than in 2010. Is it the (slighty) more prominent synth ? Jim's piano playing, a bit more convoluted than Matt's and quite recognizable ? I don't know... I like it, but it's nowhere near the 1996/2001/2005 golden era of TR IMHO.

2) Crows is good, but I still find that Saskatoon version was better, especially for the final solo. Sometimes it is irrational, you just have a crush on a concert where everything is so perfect, Saskatoon did this for me last year; maybe the excellent soomlos recording played a role in that...

3) Going Home is great, definitely better than in 2008, but pales in comparaison to Vaison'96 where the guitar playing was so much more energetic...

4) Why not both Crows and KOG ??! This one is a really valid criticism. I can only go to one show this year (Paris) and I already know I won't get both, this sadens me because there are the only two new songs that were really reworked - the others are pretty similar to the album version, if not inferior (IUTC without Harmonica is just... strange I think).

5) I really hope Border and Piper will be back, these two gems from the GL album were the best open and closer in ages !

6) Let's strangle Sonny Liston ! :)

Still, happy to have the great core DS subset (Sultans, TR, BIA), I don't miss SFA and I could do without overplayed R&J; I think a MK concert without them would be... well, like "On the night" is without Sultans and TR ! I'm also happy to have those solo gems that are WII, SAN, HFB, MT, they are real classics now.

Some good point there Herlock.  I think they were in safe mode the whole night really, playing as though they knew it was being recorded and it was the first night with the possibility of mistakes!

Bearing that in mind I think the solos were the shortest ever, but the concert was energetic.  This is always a case for the first gig and I hear the audience was a fanatical sold-out one which helps too.

Yes, the versions were quite good (or better than expected) but I'd like to see the solo's become longer.  If I'm correct TR was a full minute shorter than last tour in it's final solo!

I do disagree on Crows though;  I think it's far better now with Mark actually playing some audible guitar during the lyrics of the song.  Last year that part of the song just felt flat.  I still think the solo at the end ends rather abruptly, but then I want all his solos to go on forever! ;D
