"How To Get A Record Deal" by Mark Knopfler

I was looking through a 20-year old music newspaper this morning and came across an advert for a video entitled "How To Get A Record Deal", produced by the National Academy of Songwriters, an organisation that is now defunct, I believe.

The advertisment says you will hear on the video from record company bosses, A&R execs, producers and successful performers. It then gives the names of some of those contributors. There is Phil Collins and also Randy Newman, for example. But there is also "Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)" in the list and, in a reproduction of the video cover, there is a small photo of MK. Of couse, since the NAS produced SONG TALK, whose MK interview I put on AMIT last year, it may simply be a bit of audio from that.

If you folk know about this already, I apologise. If you don't, then I guess it's down to eBay and record fairs.

New to me too.  Our very own mine of information just dug up another diamond.

Hardly a diamond. Just something old that's turned up as new.  As I mentioned, I suspect it is just a voice-over, using the SONG TALK interview I mentioned before.

As I recall, Paul Zollo conducted the MK interview for SONG TALK and, if his Dylan interview is anything to go by, he recorded his interviews. The Dylan interview has circulated for a long time, so you might be able to get hold of ithe Mark one.

Incidentally, on the bookstands at present is a thick magazine-style publication called something like "100 Guitar Heroes" and produced by GUITARIST magazine.  It costs

Always interesting to learn new things literally dug up after years though.

I can't imagine the video thing sold that well, so I suspect there'll be precious few of them around but you never know.
