Transatlantic Sessions 2013 - Gateshead
« on: February 05, 2013, 06:10:24 PM »
Just returned home from my trip to Gateshead to see TS and it was really wonderful.   Great line-up, including the house band with all the usual suspects - John McC, Mike McG, Aly Bain, Phil Cunningham, John Doyle, Donald Shaw, Danny Thompson and Jerry Douglas and special guests including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Teddy Thompson, Eric Bibb, Bruce Molsky, Emily Smith and Aoife O'Donovan.  We enjoyed it all very much!    :thumbsup

Glad you enjoyed it.  Love Phil and Aly's two-man shows.

No, not "Hey Joe" but he did play a few tunes, completely solo - can't remember the titles.   Everyone was on top form btw!   :) I missed a few out -  there was a great banjo player and singer called Dirk Powell too, amongst others.  It's a great atmosphere, because there's a little lounge area at the back of the stage and some of the artists not singing/playing retire to the sofa - Teddy Thompson was lying on the floor at one point - everything is very laid back!  I loved it!

Here's Eric Bibb, playing one of my favourites from the show - this is Glasgow, but Gateshead sounded just as good:

Just been to TA at Birmingham, brilliant!   Teddy Taylor has a powerful voice.   One of the things I thought would sound good is MK and Jerry Douglas playing together,  they are on Heidi Talbot's cd but can't really hear them.

Picked up a wad of MK tour leaflets in the foyer, nice pic A5 size.   Will find a wallspace to do a montage

Hi Sally!   I'm glad you enjoyed the show.   I was very impressed with Aoife O'Donovan and especially one of the songs that she sang, accompanied by the banjo-player, Dirk Powell.  I don't know if she sang it at Birmingham, but it sounded very like Dylan's "John Brown" with different lyrics.   I can't find anywhere what it was - did you manage to catch the title, if it was sung at your concert by any chance?   :)   I loved Mary Chapin Carpenter too, especially "I feel a need for solitude".

Hi Val

Yes she did, she was so immersed in her singing, was impressed.   It was the last night in B'ham, they had done London before.

and a new set of shows to be shown in the autumn - yeah!

Hi Sally!  Thank you for the links!     The song "Calvary" sounds similar, but it's definitely not the same one.  I think it could be from that album though.   We did an audio of the show and I can't hear anything resembling the same lyrics, though the tune is similar.   :)

Yes, they were about the Civil War, but I can't make them out.  I will keep searching!   ;)   I listened to clips from the Calvary album, but it's not from that one.

Perhaps you could post the question somewhere about what the song was?   Would be interested to find out now!
