Wow, its heroic scale alone is impressive; I did not expect it to be so big! Formally, I think the color choices are great. The subdued yellows of the face cause the saturated blues of the eyes to stand out intensely. I agree that it does make him look too old and worn, but that may come merely from all those lines created by the loose and aggressive application of paint which, on the bright side, also creates a dynamic sense of movement. That may just be the artist's technique that would cause anyone's face to look more rugged. Perhaps it wasn't the best decision for the painter to give him such an insecure and anxious look on his face, but I have to admit that the eyes have a real psychological presence to them -- something that's pretty tough to create in a portrait.
