I thought the piano went some way to take the part of the harmonica, but of course, it can't replace it.    I liked it a lot anyway!   :)

The mention of MK in this report is admittedly brief but it is not exactly dismissive, even though it is from a long-established Dylan website.  Note also the last paragraph.

Review by Gord Ellis

This was my first Dylan show since March 2004, at the Kool Haus in
Toronto. That was such a good show - and I was so close - that I thought
I`d never need to see another show again. But that was three great albums
ago, plus Knopfler was opening,so...

Mark Knopfler and his band were superb. No song by song review, but he
went from strength to strength. The sound and playing was impeccable. My
buddy Bill was in heaven. Privateer was a highlight.

After a half hour break or so,Bob and his band came on to the sound of Stu
Kimball`s blues guitar licks. There was Bob, looking good. My first
thought was he was striking a very Rolling Thunder Revue look. He opened
with Watching the River Flow, on organ. A stong version, with great
singing. Right away, I noticed Bob was way up in the mix, and the guitars
were too low. For my ears anyway. This would continue the whole show
really.

We had really good seats, 4th row middle. So I could see everything. Bob
was havng a hoot, smiling at Tony and Donnie. He seemed to have little
interaction with Charlie and Stu, which surprised me. But this would
continue all night. An electric It Ain`t Me Babe and Things Have Changed
had people bopping and cheering. Nice to see Bob on a telecaster. His
guitar was loud and strong.

By the time, he got to the grand piano , it was clear he was going to be
very high in the mix. Each plunk of the piano roared out. Bob was the
loudest instrument on stage. He played like a jazzman, pulling out little
riffs and runs. They were interesting, and lead the band, but it was
sometimes hard to hear the rest of the boys. This made for some
"interesting" moments. Bob was singing great, though, and the band was
very tight as usual. I can only assume that this mix was directed by his
Bobness, as no sound man in this day in age would actually leave the mix
that way without being directed to.

This mix issue really showed up on Tangled up in Blue. The root suspended
chord guitar riff was low, and Bob's plunking keys were super loud.So
trying to follow the chord changes was really hard. You could see the band
doing their best to follow each other. Was this the mix they were getting
as well? Again, Bob was having a great time, like a kid on an new toy.
Legs kicking, playing one handed. Chaplinesque. But adjust the mix a bit,
and this would have been a killer. As it was, it really never got cooking
like it should have. This happened time and again.

Which is not to say I didn't enjoy the show. I did. Bob was really into
it. Ballad of a Thin Man was the best Dylan performance I've ever seen
live in 6 shows over nearly 27 years. He really performed and played great
harp. The crowd at it up. It was awesome. No keys, by the way, so you
could hear the band perfectly. And they were great.

Highway 61 also caught flight, and the giant piano licks blended right in.
But Charlie was hemmed in. It was really weird to see him strumming
away, barely audible. Same with All Along the Watchtower and Rollin' Stone
He is such a monster guitarist. But Stu Kimball took nearly every lead.

I`d assumed there would be several new songs. But the only Tempest tune
was Scarlet Town, and it was almost perfect. It also got a very big cheer
right at the first few bars. People have been listening to the new album.
It sounded fantastic and I really wished that Bob had trotted out a few
more like Pay in Blood, or Dusquesne Whistle. They just will work with
this band and mix. If this is the new mix.

It was a short show, just 15 songs. Including a very odd Blowing in the
Wind encore, that had Bob standing at the keys, plunking out a repeated
riff that the band would follow. Then it was over.

I should mention it was very close to a full house at MTS,and there was
the usual range of oldsters, kids and people having a real religious
experience seeing Bob. So it wasn't quite what I expected, but when is it
with Bob? I do feel he is wasting the talents of Charlie Sexton by boxing
him in so much, but that's Dylan. And no Knopfler cameo. Again, typical
Bob. And more new songs please. But it was really great to see him again
having so much fun. Roll on Bob.[/

I have highlighted the clear confirmation that MK did not play during Dylan's set.

P.S. Oddly, try as I might (and I have tried), I can't print Charlie's surname properly. Presumably, some kind of filter replaces the "EX" bit of his surname with "PAM". So, for "Spamton", read "S e x t o n".

Thanks! That spam thing is really funny!

I have seen Bob now 4 times live (first two 1995 and 1997, and last year 2 shows) so 4 Dylan shows in 17 years - I would never dare to write such a profiled review because I guess I just can't judge Bob's form - of course I can say if I liked it or not, but a lot of ER people have probably shows in three-figures on their account - and maybe lost their objectivity... However, this is a greatly written and very nice review! If Bob was playing in Europe, I would not hesitate and go for another one...  8)

Nice to see that Mark obviously gets good critics for his opening show. He is able to convince people who were not exactly there because of him - high quality!

As I've said before, Bob is highly variable in performance, not just from one show to the next but from one song to the next in the same show. He is unpredictable. In contast, Mark is very consistent but also quite predictable. He even cracks the same joke(s) that we've all heard many times before.  Some Dylan fans regard that approach as too slick and it puts them off.

And, within the broad swathe of Dylan fans, some can be very single-minded. It results in the sort of thing that Pottel has mentioned (favourably, I think - the comprehensiveness of concert recordings and fans being "organised") but it also gives rise to a certain level of "blindness". One fan (I knew him a bit and he even got namechecked by Dylan from the stage but he has now passed on) once said, "I have only got 35 albums and all of them are by Bob Dylan, except one - and that was a mistake".  It's quite funny but I cannot imagine only listening to Bob Dylan. I know from talking to many other Dylan fans over the years that their musical tastes are wide and varied. [see note below]

There are many, as someone above hinted, who will only know Mark from his DS days and, for me (and others, I think), that style of music is overblown.  Since the DS days, Mark has continued to develop, has taken a different approach if you like, a different direction, has absorbed different influences. It would be an interesting study to establish what he has adapted and/or adopted over the years but, whatever it is, I enjoy it in a way that I could not with the "DS-approach". MK has nothing to prove to AMIT-posters but, by going out on the road with Dylan, he is taking his music to people who probably would not otherwise have attended one of his shows.  Some will respond positively; some will not.

Part of a musician's life is taking their music to new audiences and trying to win them over. Good on him!

Note: my own latest CD purchases are:  "A Proper Introduction to The Carter Family - Keep On The Sunny Side", "Keep A Dollar In Your Pocket - More Roots of R&B", "Bo Diddley - The First Ten Singles",  and "The Inspirational Carole King - Natural Woman". So, broadly, from the 1920s-1930s, the 1940s, the 1950s and the 1960s-1970s, respectively. All four bought from one supplier for a total of

I say bring this back. Not really the song, but the performance, the energy, the atmosfere, the guitar playing........(to me the last great Mark tour)
At least MK is doing what every artist should do after releasing an album...playing the bloody songs LIVE (KTGC tour was ridiculous). No better way to promote the album and get the songs to be heard.

I haven't really followed the problems with releasing the new album in North America but, if it has been released in Canada but not in the USA, it will be interesting to see if this affects the live set list once the tour moves south of the border. I hope not.

NICE.

The tour has begun and now I can fill my days by reading whining on ER about Bob's shorter set because of MK's boring opening set and grumbling from the entitled bunch at AMIT that Bobcats aren't reporting Mark's setlist  ;D

Love 'em both and wish I was catching some of the tour.

Kind of ironic, Mark is promoting an album unavailable in the country and Bob is ignoring one that is for sale.

Dylan tours are never set up to support an album release. He just tours until he decides not to. The albums come out (or not) and that's it.

The only link between concerts and album releases is that, these days, he will rarely perform a new song until it' has been released, quite likely to avoid encuoraging the sales of bootlegs.  Other than that, pretty much forget it.

So, once an album gets released, we hope we might to get to hear something from it live.

Got to agree with you Arabia about the few individuals concerned. But not the actual forums. AMIT links to each seperate concert on ER and also lists Bob's sets. That's because our mods have huge respect for the artist that invited our man to tour with him. Agree that the "Krusty" and "Baldy" stuff is just great banter like between friendly football rivals.

Dylan - "Blowin' In The Wind":

Presented somewhat differently from what you  heard last year.  Maybe it's time for Mark to step out a little.
