Dire Straits wikipedia book
« on: September 17, 2012, 09:55:46 PM »
Found this on the web:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book:Dire_Straits

It's kind of interesting!

It also mentiones some outtakes on albums:
Making Movies:

    "Making Movies"
    "Suicide Towers"
    "Twisting By the Pool"
    "Sucker for Punishment"

Love over Gold:

"I like to go to work"
    "Worth your while"
    "Music"
    "Badges, Posters, Stickers and T-Shirts"
    "Private Dancer"
    "The Way it Always Starts"

Does anybody know of the outtakes of love over gold?
I don't know 4 songs!

Will we ever be fortunate enough to listen to such rarities?
And I always thin about the two songs MK gave to Tina Turner. Is said that MK didn't record the lyrics to Private dancer. Has the same happened to Overnight sensation or he actually did the voice on the song before giving it to Tina?

The first from LOG sounds like a line from TR, perhaps it was incorporated into that grand song.

I thought Making Movies was "turned into" Expresso Love?

Interesting to see "I Like to Go to Work" as that's obviously the line in TR.  I wonder if it could be two songs merged...

Yep, sung by the late Gerry Raferty. Who knows if the demo - if there's is a demo after all - sounds exactly the same or is completely different...

You can here the song Making Movies played by Mark on an acoustic guitar and by the band on the Arena documentary, on the Alchemy Blu-Ray. There music be a recording of that track in an archive somewhere.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

And "worth your while", also mentioned, it's a line on "It never rains". The same thing could have happened here,as ITN is almos 8min long.

Merci  :)

my reply was a bit short and dry, but it's not easy to post via an iphone  ;D

it's explained in the Oldfield book, something like : "Mark wrote a song called "suicide towers " (there's even some pieces of lyrics in the book, but can't remember them exactly, kind depressive if memory serves, must have been about the Holly Vincent break-up), it wasn't achieved, but the riff evolved in Expresso love"

Quote
I thought Making Movies was "turned into" Expresso Love?

yes indeed, the riff sounds a bit the same, but the lyrics became parts of Skateway.

It's likely Mark tried different things, and mixed original ideas to reach to the songs we know

The new song Seattle should be followed by It Never Rains in the new setlist.
