obviously they like each other mucho, i do too, so let's discuss anything Bob-Mark related here.
over on ER (http://expectingrain.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=71708) they seem to assume the song Pay in Blood has the same chord progression as Darling Pretty, as i have not heard the album yet (my deluxe edition is to arrive on friday  ) i cannot confirm it, but i will as soon as i receive.
when will guy start this friggin dylan tour diary now, they must be rehearsing now...!!!

I'm listening to Pay in Blood as I write this and there is only a passing resemblance , but it would never have entered my head at all unless it had been brought to my attention.   Pay in Blood is probably the best of the five songs I have heard so far, but ruined, for me, by Bob's gargling voice!

I got a link yesterday (    ) with Dylan leaks but it isn't working in Germany due to territorial restrictions blablabla.... Is there a chance to listen to the first leaked songs already? Pottel?

However, concerning this thread:

I am sure Follow The Ribbon is very much Dylan influenced. I love this song. At AMIT it seems Occupation Blues is much more loved. However the  monotone and repititous melody does it for me very well. The song deserves every single of the 8 minutes playing time.  First I thought of another Civil War Soldier story, but I guess it is more some kind of ... what? barnstormer, stroller? Whatever??

Also, the idea that Dylan was influenced by Mark and not only vice versa has something surprising for me. Everybody thinks of course that Mark has the great chance and "received an audience" from Big Bob, but why should Bob not appreciate Mark's contributions as well? It is reported Bob seemed to love "Song For Sonny Liston", which immediatley made Mark so proud to write another song about Sonny....    (tongue-in-cheek ...)

While I love them both, and while it's hard to compare them, I think they could both learn from each other:

Mark is the better songwriter. Yes, I mean that. Dylan often just takes a traditional song scheme and fills it with cryptic lyrics (some of which he lifts from old poets ...). He should remind himself of the fact that he used to write great melodies, too

Bob is the better producer. Yes, I mean that. While Mark sometimes still washes his songs with fabric softener (or allows Guy Fletcher to do so), Dylan shows more character. The way an album like "Love and Theft" was produced is exactly the way "Privateering" should have been produced, in my opinion.

I agree, but would also say that Privateering is a step in the right direction, compared with the last solo albums...

Privateering is just right for me. But if the above referred to everyithing Mark has done from 1990 to 2009 id say "Well said!"

I've listened to "Tempest" over the weekend, and while there is great stuff on it (favourites at the moment are "Narrow Way" and "Soon after Midnight"), I must say that I'm a bit disappointed. The epic folk ballads don't quite live up to older equivalents ("Highlands", 'Cross the Green Mountain" etc.), and "Roll on John" is just plain embarrassing. Generally, and compared to the unassuming but highly enjoyable "Together Through Life", this new one seems somewhat overambitious.

For me, the best Dylan song 2012 is "Follow the Ribbon".

Yeah, but the REALLY ridiculous thing about his new album is the album closer, this tribute to John Lennon. God, I adore Bob Dylan, but sometimes he'd really need someone to protect him from his own ideas. "Roll on John" is worse than 1969's "Wigwam". If you've ever heard that, you'll know what I mean.
