I think Ingo is wrong about "no 3/4 folk waltzes on this album". Kingdom of Gold falls into that category.

And can anyone explain what he means by "time changes", maybe? I have a vague idea, but I haven't studied music theory, so I'm really not sure. Sounds interesting, though, because he says it's typical for MK.

No, as I said in a comment on Ingo's site, celtic tunes (like kingdom of gold, let it all go, lily of the west,etc...) are NOT in 3/4, there most of the time are in 6/8.
It means there are 4 times in a bar, but each time is divided in 3, not in 2 or 4, like in 2/4 or 4/4.
That's the same difference between rock'n'roll which is "straight time " ("binaire" in french) and blues or jazz which is "shuffle" ("ternaire" in french)

Secondary waltz is in 3/4, because it's a waltz 
but each time in a bar is divided in 2, not in 3

Typical Marks music is based on bars with different times :

"Normally" a song in 4/4 would have all his bars with 4 times. But Mark like to include bars with 2 times in it, it brokes the rhythm.

Thanks, I know what you mean. Still, 3/4 and 6/8 are the same, mathematically.  It's easy to dance a waltz to Kingdom of Gold (not that I'd want to, though).

It's more a musicwriting-thing, yes you can dance a waltz on 6/8, actually it's done very much

Yes of course mathematically it's the same

during years I thought it was the same, e.g. if you listen a waltz and blues, all divisions fall the same time, but it's obviously not the same groove, even if you can divide the 2 rhyhtms (blues and waltz) in 3

For a musician, mainly for the drummer, it's completely different to divide a bar in 3 (a waltz) and a time in 3 (a blues) because the accents don't fall at the same time : in a waltz you'll have 2 snare in a bar, while in a blues you'll only have one, and the hi-hat will do the 3 division

so mathematically you can say it's the same, but musically it's totally different, and it's not just musicwriting-thing, it's a totally different groove to your ears

Unfortunately it seems to be cool to write bad reviews about Mark here in Brazil. Most journalists over here know bananas about music. Once I read two reviews, one next to another, first one on Jonny Lang and second on some rapper. Needless to say Jonny, who's an awesome musician, was criticized and the rapper praised. I recall also reading a review at the time GH came out and the reviewer said something like 'A savourless album. But what could you expect from a bald guy who writes a song called I'm desolate?'.

I can read reviews of british, dutch, german, spanish newspapers but nothing that comes from France.
I really think Mark is underrated by journalists in this country !
There's so much to say about Lady Gaga and others that there's no more space for artists like MK.
Dire Straits was very famous but MK is almost unknown !
Maybe it was what MK was looking for when he decided to stop DS.
But after all, this lack of emphasisis doesn't prevent MK to fill all the arenas he goes to during his tours !!!
And that's not the case of everyone !

This is especially for the dutch fans!

I was reading the Volkskrant a few days ago and found an advertisement of the concert at Ziggodome.
Today I got the paper again and on the frontpage: Bob Dylans beste plaat(Bob Dylans best record)
Then there was a whole page for BD.
I thought why the hell no thing about MK?
And then suddenly, a few pages later: A 2 page thing about MK!:D
So for al the dutch fans, buy the Volkskrant of today!(september 7th)
