The Captain and His Ship
« on: June 26, 2012, 01:01:45 AM »
For anyone who want s to listen, I've been working on a lot of new material recently and this is one of the demo's I recently completed.  It's just me on my lonesome playing all instruments and recording using GarageBand but I do try to make these recordings as professional as I possibly can!  More songs are in the pipeline but I am not as prolific as MK, as much as I would love to be.  The images should give some idea as to where I got the subject matter from for this one! And I might add that I did write it before learning that Bob Dylan had written a song about the same subject for his new album.  Bloody copycat  ;D.  Hope you like it.

This is really superb! I hope you rather feel flattered (and not offended) when I say that it has an absolute great Old Times MK feeling about it, from the 1995/1996 era... The electric guitar sounds awesome on this. This is exactly the kind of composition I wish Mark would do more often, a little more build-up, story in the music, not only verse - chorus, verse -chorus and so on...

I had some trouble to understand all the lyrics, would it be possible to put the lyrics online?

And one last:

Where did you hear about Bob doing a song about the Titanic?

Thanks very much for the comments. Much appreciated. Not sure where I read about Dylan's Titanic-themed song...it may have been on this very forum actually.

Here are the lyrics. Always open to interpretation of course, though I pretty much took the stories and articles I read over the 100th annivsary commemorations of the disaster and converted them into lyrics. I read that "let me go boys" may have been the captain's last words so I had to find an opportunity to include those somewhere.

-------

Took a taxi from home to the docks
A black bowler hat fits the pride
Of the captain and his ship
Such majesty follows his stride
A man at the wheel, in control
Yet time makes its final betrayal
He could weigh his anchor for good
In the meantime it's time to set sail

Her horn echoes over the docks
As bystanders look on in awe
Of the captain and his ship
Her passengers wave to the shore
As proudly he takes her to sea
With the crewmen they dine in great style
Only the best is on offer
It's the high life for just a short while

The warnings ring out 'cross the waves
Icy seas lay dead ahead
For the captain and his ship
In the wireless room greetings are read
As the ship sails on for the unknown
Her bow ploughs the cold lonely sea
It's full steam ahead for the city
For the captain where else would he be?

Beneath us lies all that remains
As nature erases all trace
Of the captain and his ship
The charge of his crew was his place
"Let me go boys" I'll sail on
This sailor made his final trip
Where flowers now float in the darkness
The captain went down with his ship

That was very good! Sounds a bit "MK-esque" but with touches of your own style. The "overall-feel" of your song is really captivating!

Like someone in the guitar shop said to Mark once - stick with it!
And she's sitting in her Lusso, in the early morning sun.
