As quite a few guitar freaks inhabit this site, I thought you might like to see this:-

For those who don't know, a Vincent Black Lightning is a (classic) motorbike and "Box Hill" is a hill in the North Downs, south of London. The name has quite a resonance for those of us who come from south-west London and probably to those who come from further afield.

It makes an appearance in Jane Austen's "Emma" which I was forced to study at school and which I've largely forgotten but for the Box Hill reference [because I was taken to Box Hill by my parents quite a few times when quite young]

Anyone listening to Richard Thompson? I went to a concert with him the other day, and I have to say it is one of the best shows I have ever seen. It was a Thompson solo show, with only him and his acoustic guitar. Brilliant voice, great lyrics and stunning guitar playing... Starting his career in the sixties, no doubt Mark must be a fan of him. I found these pictures of them meeting when Richard Thompson received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC 2 Folk Awards in 2006. If you haven't heard of him, you should give him a chance

The day that I went out to buy a copy of Making movies for a bloke at work his mate in the office handed me a copy of "shoot out the lights" saying that if I liked MK's playing then I needed to hear RT. Been an admirer ever since.

I always had interest on Richard Thompson since I listened to Paul Brady version of "The dimming of the day" but never knew where to start, as those "Richard and Linda Thompson" records doesnt seem atractiveto me by some unknown reason...

RT: Cooksferry Queen



As this song is listed elsewhere as a London song, I assume it's a reference to Cooks Ferry Inn, a pub on the North Circular Road that was a music venue for years and years. It started in the late-1940s or early-1950s with jazz bands but I attended quite a few times in the mid-1960s (mostly American blues and r'n'b players but also The Animals). I think the likes of Led Zep and Ten Years After also played there a bit later... but in the BDS years, I believe (BDS = Before DS).

My wife and I have referred to BC in the past as our life Before Children. My visits to Cooks Ferry Inn were therefore both BC and BDS.

No, around the time I began to develop any kind of interest in him, though the real collecting began towards the end of the 1960s. And that was  BBTF (before "Before The Flood")
