Just heard the samples, not the whole songs but here is a first impression:

There are 5 songs that I liked very much from the first time:

1. Bluebird
2. Blood and water
3. Yon two crows
4. Go love
5. Got to have something

There are 2 that are OK for me:
6. Haul away
7. Corned beef city

BUT, there are another 13 that are not my cup of tea at all, very repetitive tunes. That's pretty much when I think back that in the old days of DS albums and solo stuff GH and STP there were no skippers for me. I can't get warm with that standard rootsy blues, celtic and country style over and over again. I mean there's always been much blues in MK songs from beginning but it the base was rock with blues ingredients.

I don't understand why MK puts his virtuosity and outstanding charasteristics, something that makes him unique and different from other musicians on our planet, totally in the background: his brilliant guitar playing. Is he really tired of soloing around after all the years? Instead of this he now tries to be a singer which I don't like much.

Just my opinion, but it was time for an honest word! Maybe he will turn back to the DS roots or the GH-style....

Mine was an honest comment also.   After I had given the songs more than two hearings, I was hooked and we must bear in mind that these are only snippets - there is much more of the songs to hear yet!

Apart from the bluesy songs, there are also some very beautiful melodies and also the prospect of more MK guitar.   I like the sound of these blues - they are very reminiscent of the NHB of whom I am a great fan.

As for MK turning back to DS or GH - he has been there and done that, lovely as it was, but now he's doing different things, which I'm all in favour of.

I listened to the samples on itunes.  I think Go Love is a very good tune from what I have heard. The female vocals add a very effective shadow to Mark's and a nice dose of guitar signing the tune along with him makes.   I also like Redbud Tree - again a good dose of characteristic guitar.  To me, on these tunes, he sounds most natural and most himself.

I will save my thoughts on the rest of the album for myself.

Thanks to whoever found the samples on itunes.

Thanks for the photo-link marc96er, I like the photo much better than the get-lucky-photos of Zoriah, who is a war-photographer... His photos don`t always flatter  Mark.

I had a strange feeling listening the samples.

Up to now when Mark wrote musical stuff he turned the inspiration he got from into definitive "Mark Knopfler's" style. Even the buesy tunes he played by the past with Dire Straits were sounding like nothing else.

When he decided to make it the cover way that turned into the NHB, it was fun rendition.

For the first time yesterday I was bemused to listen some original MK stuff he absolutlely did not write a single note.
I like blues very much but oh my god what Mark is doing on this new album is just blues stuff already heard thousand of times, and here with absolutly no originality.

Now I heard the snippets several times and I must say I love the melodies, some more some less, but in combination with his voice and the lyrics this album is perfect for me ! Maybe he hasn`t reinvented the Blues, but up to now I havn`t heard much Blues . So for me it`s kind of new and full of athmosphere.

What I heard in some of these songs were nods to material he has written himself on other albums - not the same, of course, but there are likenesses, which is inevitable, I suppose.   The only one of the blues-sounding songs which was really recognisable to me was "Got To Have Something" - obviously a take on "Rollin & Tumblin".
