Summers coming my way
« on: April 27, 2012, 11:34:37 AM »
I never read this information about the first demo recorded by MK:

In April 1970, while living in Leeds, Knopfler recorded a demo disk of an original song he'd written, "Summer's Coming My Way". The recording included Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), Steve Phillips (second guitar), Dave Johnson (bass), and Paul Granger (percussion). Johnson, Granger, and vocalist Mick Dewhirst played with Mark in the band Silverheels.

It comes from here: http://wn.com/Mark_Knopfler click biography

Silverheels.  Sounds kinda country!  Reminds me of spurs that cowboys wear, perhaps an indication to the type of music they perform. :-\

They probably chose the name on the spur of the moment. You know how young guns are.

Silverheels - oh, my youth!

Jay Silverheels was the actor who played The Lone Ranger's sidekick in a cowboy series of that name in the early days of (black and white) television in Britain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Silverheels

"Hi, yo, Silver! Awa-a-a-a-a-y", said the Lone Ranger at the end of each episode, as the  William Tell Overture thundered away and a voice-over uttered the immortal words, "Who was that masked man anyway?"

Howz on earth did us Knopfler nuts never hear of this news before?
I'd heard of the Duolin String Pickers, Brewers Droop & Cafe Racers, but never Silverheels!

Cheers. BBB

This news has been around for a good while. Summer's coming my way is mentioned in the official MK News biography for example. Not sure, but I think Oldfield also mentions it in his book? These sources didn't mention the name Silverheels though. Nevertheless, it would be cool to hear it. The recording must collect dust somewhere.

Here's a little quote from MK News biography:
While living in Leeds Mark made his first record. It was recorded in a room that had been converted into studio in a house in Pudsey. The song was called Summer's Coming My Way and it featured Steve Phillips on twelve-string guitar.

...Well, he's a big star now but I've been a fan of his for years. The way he sings and plays guitar still bring me to tears...

Here is what I found in Oldfield's book (p.44 on the french edition) :

Around the same time (note from JF :the previous page from the book is about Mark and Sue hercombe, so the "around the same time" isn't very accurate), Mark was able to make a record. Dave: "a guy who did the markets, I believe, paid Mark to go to London to record a demo. They went into a real studio and record it in half an hour, an hour. It was never released, I think no one has ever done anything with it, either, it just happened. He never claimed it to be of superior quality, it was a demo. A really good song called "summer's coming my way", good for its time. Given what it was and what he had in hands, it was really a brave effort. He was still really in the folk clubs in the time ".

sorry for the bad translation, I used Google and corrected what I can, in order to be the closer to the book

I know that MK has many good new songs, but I wonder why he doesn't record that old songs he has from that past. I

Jbaent,

If he's not even happy about many of the really good songs he has released, you can imagine what he thinks of unreleased songs AND songs that were written in his youth.
