As we discussed in http://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php/topic,1989.0.html, Ry for sure respected Mark for being "real" and a good musician. That was back in the 80s. He probably thinks the same about Mark today, but as Ry is more politically radical and a bit "cooky", I would guess he thinks Mark is a bit dull and slick.

There was also an article that I read somewhere, probably from the earlier days, where the interviewer played various songs for Mark where Mark had to comment on the songs. In that interview he praised Cooder (and said by the way that Eddie Van Halen's playing was extremely good technically but gave him nothing ...). Where did I read that ...?

It has occurred to me that as someone else asked about essential Pink Floyd, I should ask here what essential Ry Cooder would be worth exploring for a novice?
I have only the Pairs,Texas CD, which is beautiful. Any suggestions?

Fletch, I bought a nice compilaton CD called The Ry Cooder Anthology: The UFO Has Landed (http://www.amazon.com/The-Ry-Cooder-Anthology-Landed/dp/B001EO2UJA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331287099&sr=8-1). It's compiled by his son, Joachim, who is an excellent percussionist and plays with Ry a lot. And it's compiled not chronologically, but according to style, meaning similar songs from different periods have been put together to create a feeling of uniformity. Nice idea. It covers early recordings, later stuff, some soundtracks. Really good compilation. I personally like his later stuff the most, but they may be a little eclectic for some: Chavez Ravine, I, Flathead, and Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down are great albums.

Nice one, thanks! I was at the Old Grey Whistle Test, too! I love the whole album, actually, although it sounds very sterile and is not exactly made to smooth your ears - productionswise, not musicalwise..

I think Ry has some resemblance with Keanu Reeves, don't you think?
