First gigs
« on: October 25, 2011, 12:42:49 AM »
What was the first gig you went to? I was lucky, my first was Frank Sinatra! 1989 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and he was with Liza Minnelli & Sammy Davis Jnr. I was 15 and still remember it so vividly. The show started with Sammy doing a set followed by Liza, Sinatra came on after the interval and then the three of them performed together.
Over 20 years later I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Sinatra's entrance on stage was incredible-no overture by the orchestra and no 'ladies and gentleman Frank Sinatra' intro. During the interval you could just feel the tension and excitement building up...then the lights dimmed and Sinatra just strolled onto the stage! Magical, the standing ovation was something I will never forget.

First gig ever was "Tribute" a progressive rock/new age/whatever formation from Sweden, biggest "hit" Icebreaker, and the 30 minutes long New Views.
I loved them and must have listened to them a 1000 times - to their record that is. Must have been around 1983/1984, and I didn't have no clue about
Dire Straits then. Later on I recognized that "Tribute" had a rather "academical" sound, all made up with a tape machine by only two or three guys. Listened to them again lately and still was wallowing in pleasure...

First Dire Straits gig was 1991, first show in Bremen. Loved it. (Of course.) In fact I loved it so much that I was riding on the train to Munich two weeks later without a ticket and trying to get into the Olympiahalle, which I did by paying far too much to a spiv after Calling Elvis was already going... Missed the first five minutes and entered the hall precisely at Danny's percussion solo... And had a great "You and Your Friend" which I found boring at that time but was obviously so rarely played on that tour that I am proud of having been there of course!  ;D Great memories...

I think it was Murray Head in 1984.
But what I'm sure that a few months later I saw DS in 1985 in Dijon, France.
And we have just one world
