I was surprised and sorry this morning to hear that REM had disbanded.   Although not a huge fan, I did like lots of their music and enjoyed their live performances very much!    I will miss them!

Not really a huge fan. I love Stand and Losing My Religion is a classic, but otherwise... meh.

for a year/18 months, then release a new album
& tour.
I like their mid early-mid 90's stuff best.
Do you think Stipe will do a solo record?

Superval my sympathies for your loss.

I do believe though, it is a good thing they disbanded and will stop offering their overpriced and not that good lately, product that they call music. From their early beginnings, it was way over me why they are so popular, but they had their commercial peak with the very good Out of time and their artistic peak with Automatic for the people. Before and after that (for me at least) it was only a couple of good singles per record. I say that with the knowledge that their sound was never my cup of tea, so I could never fully appreciate their sound. On the other hand their 80ies sound was not that unique, but they had a better break than other similar bands, like Guadalcanal diary. And well I hated their 20 million contract with Sony in the early nineties. It was ringing too many bells for my  taste. One of them was the price their records had after that.

Anyway, I do understand your frustration, and I am sorry for it.

Hey VGONIS2002, I did say I wasn't a big fan, LOL!!  I only have a "Best of" CD in my collection - so only on nodding terms!  Nevertheless. Michael Stipes voice was very recognisable and I did enjoy a lot of the songs esp Nightswimming and Losing my Religion.   No chance of me being in the least bit frustrated, though!

Hey Superval, I am only joking (always, I might add) , please take no offense.
I have at least ten of their records, have been buying them trying to see why they are so popular, so I could claim a loss bigger than yours.

As for recognizable voices, I find Bruce Dickinson's voice more distinctive, and if metal is not of your taste, well how about Marvin Gaye (comes with a devastatingly sad story) or Al Green (has a similar tragic story but with a more sunny ending).

Anyway they sold by the truckload and the overpriced records do not worth a dime to resell now. I guess you have made a safer investment by buying just a best of.

But wait a minute I saw in the last Mojo and Uncut that they have started reissuing their back catalogue in Deluxe editions. That's hardy disbanding, and the new - never heard material from these editions will surely make up for your loss. But this time you will buy, won't you?

Hi VGONIS2002 - WOW!  Ten records - that makes you almost a fan then! 

Yes, Bruce Dickinson's voice is very recognisable.  I find it has a certain warbly quality! 

Anyway, I don't think I will be investing in the REM Deluxe editions in a hurry though, even with never before heard material included!  The Best Of will do for me at the moment, thanks!

For me MK/DS is first place. REM second place for me. Saw them live in 2003. Very good concert!
