Mark Knopfler & Gordon Lightfoot
« on: May 17, 2011, 09:32:59 PM »
Hi. I've just heard a song by Gordon lightfoot.
I'd heard of him, but not heard any of his music.
Until now.
This sounds great and reminded me of the song
'So far from the clyde'
I started to google MK & GL and stumbled across this article
With a YouTube clip attatched.
Some lovely guitar, and what seems like a similar thread
running through. Seems like someone else thought
the same.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot

Mark Knopfler's song "So Far from the Clyde" seems to channel Lightfoot's song. It's about a ship's run to the scrapyard, so about a doomed ship rather than a doomed crew. But a similar vibe.

Cheers.  BBB

Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles.

Hi BBB!    Gordon Lightfoot is one of my favourite songwriters and I have a number of his albums.  His voice and lyrics affect me in much the same way as MK.

This is one of my favourites:

I would love to hear MK do something like this!

This particular concert was on BBC4 a couple of months ago!

Hi Val. That's really weird. I was just looking at some You Tube footage of Gordon, and was just listening to this very same song!!
Even my wife said she liked it :o :o :o

I love discovering new music that touches me. :)

Cheers   BBB

We must be telepathic!    ;D      Seriously, Gordon's voice is like Mark's in the way that I can't tear myself away from listening to it!   :P    It's really scary to think that he is now in his 70's, but he's still performing!  Let's hope MK will do the same!

Thanks for that, BBB and Val. What a great songwriter! I really loved "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"  - a haunting song with a great vibe. I wish Mark was doing more of this 'maritime' themed songs. All that he has done so far are real gems - "Single Handed Sailor", "My Claim To Fame", "Sailing To Philadelphia", So Far From The Clyde"... I want more! :)
...Well, he's a big star now but I've been a fan of his for years. The way he sings and plays guitar still bring me to tears...

My first contact with Gordon Lightfoot was through a cover of "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" made by the Rheostatics, a canadian band. In my opinion, he is a very good lyricist, though I have some reservations regarding his musical abilities.
