listening to "his latest flame" from 1998.07.27 in ronnie scotts, i noticed Mark has rarely sounded more metallic then on that one, and i gotta say i love it!

I agree with you. If you're going to do the surf/Shadows/Ventures thing, you might take it all the way.

An amazing album with that kind of guitar sound mixed with Cuban rhythms is Mambo Sinuendo with Manuel Galban and Ry Cooder (I keep mentioning this fellow ...). But I'm digressing. Let's stick to Mark's sound.

The one from Birmingham Ronnie Scott's 15.6.98 is pretty good too!   Nice close-up of Mark's fingers!     :)

For what it's worth - five of my favorite MK electric guitar sounds, off the top of my head and in no particular order:

- Lead on In the Gallery

- Lead on Smooching from Local Hero

- Lead on Tunnel of Love (Alchemy)

- Lead on You and Your Friend (On the Night)

- Lead on Telegraph Road (Basel)

[Tech talk: 4 out 5 of these sounds - Strat in positions 2 and 4 ... In my opinion, no other sound defines Mark's guitar sound better than that.]

Ok, he is my take:

Ride Across The River (Studio)

The Long Highway (Studio)

My Claim To Fame (Studio)

Tunnel Of Love (Alchemy/Studio)

Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy)

The first three are my all time favourite guitar sounds. For my absolutely typical Mark. Love it.

Strat tone was best on Making Movies.

Les Paul tone was best on Golden Heart.

End of discussion. :)

As Jackal mentioned "Smooching" I must also put my hand up for that sound. So mellow and relaxed, it just wants to make you dream....
My favourite track on the local hero cd.
Hey, i`ve got a truffle dog - finally a song the ordinary man can relate too!

One of the more odd sounds was Boom, Like That, especially live. It sounded fabolous, loved those solos. That guitar certainly had the bite and Mark used it to great advantage.

And the funny thing is, it's a really cheap guitar! I bought one for

One of my favorites, from the very beginning, (i have listened to and liked it right from the start, so it is not a left over that became favorite when i got bored of the rest), is "It never rains". The magnificent built up at the end, the interplay between the guitar and the organ, it is like diving into the darkest, grieving part of his soul. The wah-wah(?) he uses is a rare case, in all their recorded history and it must be one of the oddest additions to their records in general. Also the almost "noir" Planet of the New Orleans, has a similar, chilling feeling but with a much cleaner production and the interplay is mostly between the pedal steel and his MK2 guitar, while the keyboards are creating an after hours, empty streets, raining city, much like a Bryan Ferry background in his Bete noir album. Marvelous.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.
