I downloaded the EP "Amerikana" and the other two tracks are very good too!   :)

Would you listen to this Bap guy if MK had nothing to do with him? I don't think so... There are lots of other talented musicians whom no one knows, because they don't have the luck to produce an album with MK.
Also, the only collaboration between MK and another artist I really liked was the duet album with Emmylou Harris... And that was a real collaboration and not "I'm gonna add some guitar riffs here and there" thing.
I'm not going to buy a collaboration album just because there are some MK riffs on it and "it's better than nothing".
I hope I'll be proven wrong when the album is released but right now I won't euphemize that whole Bap Kennedy collaboration thing *shrugs*

No I probably wouldn't listen to him if MK and GF weren't working with him, for the simple reason that I would probably never have heard of him. That's what I meant earlier, it's a great way of finding out about "new" artists.

Probably not, but it is not only MK involved, it is John McCusker and Michael McGoldrick too, both of whose music I admire very much and after hearing some of Bap's songs I can imagine that it will be a very good collaboration - it is a genre that I enjoy very much anyway!

When GH was released in '96, followed by the video "A Night in London", I was very impressed by Liam O'Flynn and the rest of the group, so when his album was released, "The Piper's Call", which had MK on one track, I bought the CD.  I loved the album so much, that I went on to buy all the Liam O'Flynn albums I knew about and my husband and myself are fans of his to this day!

These other albums of Liam have nothing to do with MK, except that he introduced us to Liam's music and that is what can happen after a collaboration!   If I had ignored "The Piper's Call" because of the reasons you describe, I would be much the poorer.  Who knows, I could become a Bap fan in much the same way.    :)

I think it is a way of breaking the last years' routine to keep things fresh. Studio, recording, rehearsal, tour, since 2005 always the same circle... Maybe Mark needed some kind of contemplative times the last months for recharging his battery - and working for another artist in the familiar surrounding and with familiar band members seems a good way for me to heal some "burned out" musician... give him new power, energy and motivation. Touring seems to be very stressful, and with healthy problems it could have been much harder than usual for MK on the last tour. One tends to underrate his pain and how to cope with it on the road...

I am sure this stuff (together with the new announced jazz stuff collaboration) will lead us to a great new fresh MK album in the end - only the schedule is another one... Therefore I really have no problem with him producing Bap.  ;)

Guy writes today that: "We finished tracking today and it's all sounding magnificent." Anyone who knows what that means? How far are they getting in the process? I have a feeling that this is going pretty fast, which again means that Mark soon will be working on his own material  ;)
It's the end of a perfect day..,.

Hey, I had the same feeling, but we do not know exactly when they started tracking. Next step now should be mixing. As there is no release date known
it is likely that we won't hear about the album until it is in the stores. Just my guess of course.

I found out about a lot of artists thanks to MK productions or colaborations, so this one is welcome, specially when you discover that Bap Kenney sounds pretty nice...

Goldenheart, give him a chance.

Hi all, Happy new year! Having some time off work gave me the chance to read a lot of the new topics and replies. The last page of this topic has an interesting issue: the influence MK has in our (music) lives. To tell you the truth, i was into heavy metal, in the late 80ies, when Money for nothing compilation came out, and a friend of mind put it on a tape for me. This, not only changed my taste in music, but thankfully, since MK has collaborated with so many different artists, opened new horizons for my (music) life. I do track down the albums in which he cooperates, one way or another, because i believe that apart from a small percentage that is coincidence, obligation or luck, all the decisions he makes are conscious and based on qualities he sees at these artists. Steely Dan, Joan Armatrading, Randy Newman, Aztec Camera, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, were big but i learned through MK. And the smaller artists were fine, as well. I always say that unless it is absolutely horrible, every recording has something to give you. The time you devote to listen, is sacred because many people have devoted their time as well to produce the music you hear. It is like communion. If it is not of your taste, it is a completely different matter, but yes, when a window is open i will take a look to see what is outside. And all these folk and country influences that became obvious in MK's solo records were new windows to people like me, living in parts of the world that we are generally not used to such sounds. No use arguing about taste in art/music. Just  value the time talking about it.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

I love Guy's diaries, shame there aren't more pictures of MK's lovely guitars though.

I attended Bap Kennedy opening for Mark in 2008 and I found it quite good, especially the young guitarist.

I won't buy a collaboration album onlly based on the fact that Mark is playing on it but it may give me some interest to have a listen to.

Hi Pottel, i have been saved by MK! I read your posts carefully since i find common interests.  Yes for Gilmour. Satriani however is a bit too technical to understand. I am more into solid composition and feeling rather than technical perfection-Vai suffers from it as well. I will try to find some of the recordings you suggest!
Come on, it is not funny anymore.
