Dire Straits (1978) SHM SACD Limited edition
« on: September 20, 2010, 08:05:34 PM »
It's just released by Universlal Music Japan. The SACD was mastered from Japan copy of analog tapes. Hi-fi freaks compared it with all releases. New re-release is too louder and compressed than original vinyl and CD. Loudness war  :(

Would only trust Chuck Ainlay to remaster TBH, Alchemy sounds fecking amazing in DTS.

Chuck did not produce any remaster. He remixed BIA and Alchemy records from original multitrack tapes. Mastering (remastering) is not his work.

it is just a good example of the loudness war (BIA 20 An. Ed. CD/DVDA mastered by Bob Ludwig in 2005)

I am just cautious because SACD is not same standard than CD, and although I agree about the bad of loudness war for CD, comparing the level of a SACD with the one from a CD as an argument is not enough to make a valid judgment, just like comparing a CD audio level with a LP audio level.

To end one of my fave loudness war demo

I have both BIA re-releases - DVD-A and SACD (the same source in PCM transfered to DSD) and both of them are too loud and comressed so I still prefer the original CD (first print in West Germany).

About Dire Straits album - I have 2009 vinyl remastered by Bernie Grundman. It sounds perfect.

If I'm correct, most MK albums have been mastered by Bob Ludwig...

But you all know, only listen to music with speakers (at least

The remastered version of the first Dire Straits album sounds great...unless you listen to Get Lucky right after or vice versa. Then you start to hear the limitations of 1970s recording technology.
