Vox Magazine article July 1992
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:43:35 PM »
Scanned this in, quite an interesting article:

Some context. Vox was a rather short lived magazine, from the same people that made the NME (New Musical Express). NME had always been a "cool" paper, showcasing young, trendy bands, and consequently Dire Straits were sneered at by them.

Vox followed in the same vein, and that's the kind of style that the article is written in. I can imagine MK going mental when he saw it, but it does tend to emphasise that all was not well on that tour.

Exactly, and that's the point MK makes in the interview. I just thought it would be useful to let people know what kind of agenda the journalist had.

In 1977 wasn't Dire Straits a  young, trendy bands?

And on June 9 1979 they finally made it on the cover

This is true, I have that issue as well. After that they became mega, mega succesful and therefore un-cool to the likes of the NME.

To be fair, looking back, MK really doesn't look very cool with his baldy grey haired mullet/headband combo. Not a good look at all.

In 1977, they weren't particularly young and punk seemed to be the flavour of the time, whereas DS was a bit retro, I always thought, but I liked it very much.   In 1992, though, I don't think they were regarded as trendy at all, but here we are all those years on and MK is looking wonderful (better than 1992) and still producing great music!   :)
