but you still bought the album

First song I heard was Secondary Waltz. :)

Never liked TLWNF, although McCusker's part made the live version bearable.

my point is (I am having a point making day today  ;D ). Just like you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, you shouldn't dismiss an album because of a cheesy line (or whole song even)

If it's an artist that I've enjoyed before then I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But I'm not going to take a chance that John Illsley's album is good just because he played bass in Dire Straits.

Good point. Although you could look at it the other way: you like DS, JI was a big part of DS, chances are you will like his solo work too. Through connections with MK I discovered a lot of musicians I like (Sonny Landreth for example).

I think it was a sound snippet on John's webpage that got my attention, but Streets of Heaven gives me nothing. It's like Guy's songs; sweet, uninteresting pop.

Nat - I think you are quite right on this.

I have discovered a lot of great music from a whole variety of artists, simply by picking up on their association with Mark and Guy, and I have even been put onto great music through some of our posters here on AMIT!

I figure our musical tastes are likely to have some things in common and that the likes of MK and Guy would not work with people they don't rate highly. So now I listen to a lot of  JI, William Topley, The Coral, Landreth, Lucinda Williams, to name but a few. Artists I might never have found out about except by association with MK/Guy/you chaps.

You pay your money and you take your chance, but for me, it's all a bit of an exciting journey. I'll be buying Streets of Heaven for sure.

Oh - and I forgot to add Scott McKeon - checked him out simply cos he's managed by PCM. This young guitarist is breathtakingly brilliant and has a new album out shortly. On the off chance you may like some of the things I like, give him a listen.

And I checked out the Riders just because Guy produced their 2nd album. And I love them! Their first album is just as good and I can't wait for the 3rd one. http://www.theridersmusic.com/store

I' going to check out  Scott McKeon  now  ;D

Oh sure, I've discovered lots of artists because of MK, but that doesn't mean I'll buy everything by eveybody. And the odds aren't good in John's favour. MK didn't work with him because he was a great songwriter or guitarist, but because he was a competent bassist.

So I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and take a listen, but the one track I've heard really isn't very good IMO.

The only reason I might buy the album would be to hear MK's contributions, which as we know usually lift any track.

Hasn't lifted Streets of Heaven for me I'm afraid. Sounds like it could be a great cure for insomnia though.

FYI.

Scott McKeon may be just twenty three but he has already given a lifetime of dedication to his craft as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Initially inspired by his dad's love of blues and fifties rock n roll music he took up the guitar at the age of four. In 1998, Scott was the winner of Guitarist Magazine's "Young Guitarist of the Year" and by the age of fourteen, he was already fronting his own band. At 18, a CD was passed onto Paul Crockford, Mark Knopfler's manager, who started representing Scott which culminated in the release of his debut album "Can't Take No More" an energetic and raw take on modern electric blues. To promote the album Scott toured extensively in the UK, Europe and US, sharing performance space with Eric Clapton at Hyde Park Calling in 2008, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa to name a few as well as playing the Montreal Jazz festival and making US TV appearances. In the past two years, Scott has continued writing, touring and producing his own music as well as that of other artists such as The Bizets and James Parker. He wrote music for Robert Knight's "Rock Prophecies" Documentary which won him a RIIFF award for "Best Soundtrack". The makers of Guitar Hero Five also sought him out in order to have a track on their game as did the makers of the TV show LA Task Force. During 2009 Scott spent time writing in Nashville which included working with up and coming artist Tyler Bryant. He was also lucky enough to open for some of his greatest musical heroes this past year, including Derek Trucks and the Arc Angels and made his first performance at the Royal Albert Hall supporting Joe Bonamassa. Scott is a raw and naturally gifted guitarist who has come into his own as a singer/songwriter. His work producing other artists inspired him to take the lead in producing his new record. Scott

Yes, sounds not bad!

As Guy told us, the other track that MK is playing on is "Only Time Will Tell" which means that the guitar on this track here is not MK, although it sounds
very much like him. And that was what I tried to say earlier, when I wrote that John tries to sound like his friend. Given that this is John and not another guest...
