MK and Johnny Cash?
« on: February 25, 2010, 03:22:18 PM »
Hi all, I've just started discovering Johnny Cash's music (better late than never...) and while I was browsing youtube the other day, I found this:

I know Johnny Cash has covered lots of songs but I didn't expect an MK song to be amongst them. Being biased, I still prefer the original but this just makes me smile  :) It's lovely and I like his voice!

Sooo, I wonder... Have MK and JC ever met?

EDIT: This "video" has a better audio:

I've alway wondered if JC wrote that little middle 8 himself, I guess so...

As far as I know, the middle 8 section is still Mark's, I guess he has lots of verses that he didn't include in lots of songs, a good example being What It Is.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

As far as I know, the middle 8 section is still Mark's,

Do you have anything to base this on though? Because to me it doesn't sound like MK's work at all, the stuff about "old country songs" is very twee. My guess is that JC thought it needed a middle 8 and wrote one himself.

By the way, if people like Johnny Cash they should check out Willie Nelson. Have a listen to Spirit, I think it's one of the best albums ever.

Oh yeahh! LOVELY STUFF....I LOVE COUNTRY :D
Johnny Cash is one of my biggest favourites and I think that this song is PERFECT for him!
Ah, I am also a fan of Dwight Yoakam who was Johnny's favourite contemporary country artist, Johnny said it in interviews. Check out Dwight's first guitar player and producer Pete Anderson, amazing guitarist (now he does not play with Dwight anymore). Pete has been a guest in a webcast organized by Jack Sonni   :)

dmg, I love that Columbo episode, too! Although I have to admit the song, "I Saw The Light" got on my nerves after a while  ;D

As for the middle 8 part Johnny did, it took me quite a while to realise he did an extra verse. Guess it's been a while since I've heard the original... D'oh!

LE, hi there! Yes it's been a while...

Pottel, do you happen to know when and where Johnny and MK met? Also, do you know a good source for JC live recordings?

Dusty, I LOVE the VH-1 Storytellers with Johnny and Willie! Awesome!

Hey, it's Mr. Cash's birthday today (well, it would have been)! Bought "American VI" this morning. Along with American I, II and III. It's going to be a busy weekend  ;D The "American Recordings" are amazing. What the hell took me so long to discover them? I mean, I've known "Hurt" for quite a while and always dug it of course but these albums are full of fantastic gems! I'm so happy I'm about to discover another chapter in music history.

JC is a legend, no doubt about it. I, too, think he wrote that "middle 8" part in "Next Time..." himself. As Dusty says, it doesn't sound like MK and it doesn't fit the song well IMO.

One of my favorite songs with JC is The Highwaymen rendition of Jimmy Webb's "Highwayman". It always gives me shivers when he's singing his part in the last verse. Brilliant song that makes JC immortal.

(...)
I fly the starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find the place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I will become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll come back again... and again... and again...(...)

...Well, he's a big star now but I've been a fan of his for years. The way he sings and plays guitar still bring me to tears...

Golden Heart, do you own the CD "Til' Things Are Brighter"?
It's out of print, but you can find it every now and then in ebay. Watch out: Sometimes terribly expensive, and sometimes very reasonable!
It's an early tribute album for Johnny, featuring a wonderful version of Johnny's Home Of The Blues by Mr. Notting Hillbilly Brendan Croker!
Check it out...!
