What I don't understand from all of this, is why the drums sound thinner on the new box tracks than on the Basel TV recording  :think

Did Guy deliberately tone them down?

From what I understand, they just mixed the new tracks, and the old ones from the OTN release were very processed at the time.

I prefer the new ones, for me they are closest to the real thing.

Just go back about 90 pages of this thread and the new mixes are criticized by me and couple of others from the first moments of ITILYTM. Just seems there maybe wasn’t enough time to finish the mixes and they shouldn’t have been mixed by Guy in the first place.

Guy claims that the new mixes were mixed to sound close to same as the originals which is absolutely not the case. Again my opinion is the new mixes are simply hideous and I haven’t really listened them again because they are not pleasing to listen. All the energy is lost and they sound as depressive as the tour overall seems to have been. Nothing like the punch in the On The Night or Encores mix.

At the time DS was still trying to be somewhat a rock act and they should’ve got someone to mix the new tracks that knows how to do rock.

What makes you think we have not read those pages?  ;D

I have expressed the same sentiment, that the mixes sound weak for a rock band, and that is my main issue with TOL. My feeling is that ITIlYTM works better soundwise, though. In that song, the guitars are up front and "in your face", as they should be.

I'm glad! But do you prefer Phil's Sultans-like strumming to the classic, grittier power chords?

My friends and most dedicated fans of Mr. Knopfler and his music, "Two Pairs of Hands" is a very close take on "Go It Alone" from Noonday Underground. Half a step below, same vibe same tempo some of the same changes throughout, and even arrangement / soundwise (on Go It Alone, check out 0´26´´ / Mark´s Two Pairs check @ 1´04´´). It´s an inspired tune, that makes me feel as it is harks back to some of the late Straits vibe, I love it all, but so do I love Noonday´s hit Go It Alone. Seems probable to me anyway, the connection, inspiration, incorporation or whatever one wants to call it. Cheers to you all

Go It Alone is a cool tune.  I see some similarity in style of the beat.
