People usually praise some concerts just because we have a soundboard of them. It's curious that some average concerts are considered as excellent, when the only excellent thing on them is the quality of the recording.

fully agree.
for example, on eraly years people usually praise Rockpalast while I see nothing extraordinary on this concert
I far far prefer Barbarella' 78, Boston or Carré Amsterdam in fall 79, but yes th sound quality is poor on these ones

Birmingham 78 and Amsterdam Carre 79 are exceptional, also one of my favorites is San Remo 81.

Sound quality is not the most important, but the performance recorded.

Such a shame it was shortened after 1996, imho a rather “boring” song from 2001 onwards. :hmm

This is really interesting. I think the opposite that why I do not collect all the AUD recordings, but only radio/SB recordings.
My ears simply cannot handle peoples coughing, noise, talking, recorded far away, poor equipment etc., life is simply too short for AUD recordings :-) even if there is a great MK performance. I have tremendous respect for audiophiles that can value these AUD recordings so much, I really wish I could enjoy them more.

I thought I was the only one thinking like this. I can't deal with audio that isn't soundboard, I just can't. I have tried many times to get into them, there are so many unbelievable, rare bootlegs from '83 and I don't listen to them because of that. However there some AUD recordings that sound reasonably well: Wiesbaden 81, Tokyo 83 for example

The first bootleg that I got was San Remo 81,with bad noise for a first bootleg, but I was so amazed by the interpretations of every song that I didn't care about the sound quality at all, only about the performance.

Most of the best performances recorded are on audiences recordings, so everyone has his right to want to listen only good sounding soundboards. Missing the best performances is the price you have to pay.

I rarely listen to soundboards.

Soundboards are also my preference.

We were lucky to get so many great soundboards in 96. And recently we have had all the shows, but of course the performances have dipped.

if you mean the pace moment, yes indeed it was in 96 for the last time

I tried to summ up the whole evolution of the song during the years in this chronicle :

https://textes-blog-rock-n-roll.fr/une-chanson-a-la-loupe-sultans-of-swing-de-dire-straits/

I would guess he stopped because he used the same trick on What It Is.
