Hi everyone, I hope you're well.
My name is Joel, i'm 24 from Melbourne, Australia and i'm obviously new to the forums. I've been listening to Mark's (solo) music for a few years now. I have to say that out of any of the music I own, Mark's has been the least immediate in terms of its appeal but also the music that has grown on me the most and that has maintained my interest. I first got into Mark after listening to my Dad's vinyl copy of Brother's In Arms. What a terrific record! Apart from that, I don't know squat about Dire Straights (with the exception of some other hits).
So far I have three albums by Mark and i'm enjoying them. They are:
Sailing to Philadelphia: so far my favourite as it is musically the most varied in tempo and multi-layered in tone. I thought the line up of guests was also quite impressive.
Shangri-La: to be honest, this one took a lot of growing due to its more subdued nature but has had a fair bit of play over the last 18 months. I'm definitely a fan of the moodier tracks rather than the folkier ones. Ie: Sucker Row, Back to Tupelo, Boom Like That and Don't Crash the Ambulance.
Kill to Get Crimson: my second favourite. I like this one as it didn't take long to make an impression on me. I love We Can Get Wild, Punish the Monkey, Let It All Go, Fish and the Bird and Madame Geneiva.
I'm looking forward to Get Lucky. I think i'm short three albums. What should I try next?
Other music I enjoy:
- The Beatles
- The Rolling Stones
- Crowded House / Neil Finn
- Oasis
- U2
- Coldplay
- REM
- Tom Waits
- Joe Henry
- Paul McCartney
- Neil Young
- Radiohead
- Metallica
- Tom Petty
- The Verve
I look forward to getting to know you all!
