Guitar strings for the early Dire Straits sound
« on: September 27, 2017, 11:25:52 AM »
Soon - I think in about two weeks already - I will offer guitar strings which are made to exactly the same specs as the ones that Mark seems to have used before changing from Fenders to Schecters (77-79). Not only the same gauge, also same core, same winding, same sound :)

The original set is not produced anymore.

Amazing! Will it work on a Tele? I'm a fan of thick strings, but the idea of having almost invisible set of strings is interesting. Man, this E string is as thick as a medium A-string! :o

Why not on a Tele!? I don't know for sure what Mark then had on the two Teles they had. I very much love the sound of probably the sunburst Tele on Dylan's Slow Train Coming, e.g. on Precious Angel or I believe in you, might be the 008, too, with a brass Schecter bridge. Maybe he even had thin strings on the black Tele, why else tuning it to open A instead of the more common open G (which he also used on his National)?

Hendrix was also known for a 038 low e string (010-038) so...

Right, we got important input from David, the conclusion was:
Basing on the latest information provided by David we still do not know for sure what exactly Mark played but we could narrow it down to some slightly different variations of string gauge (problem: Fender never offered 9-38 sets as David remembers them). Luckily it was not too late - not having 1000s sets of wrong strings already produced now:). As the originals sets are all discontinued and were replaced with different gauges these days I will soon offer these strings in several slightly different variations :) This might delay the project slightly but not more than very few weeks, check out for things to come
