John Illsley UK Tour
« on: September 27, 2014, 12:19:42 AM »
Have been to see John tonight in Skegness and the show was brilliant, nice selection of songs from his last two albums mixed in with Dire Straits classics. Must admit it was great to hear Two Young Lovers and Expresso Love played live again. Phil Palmer was superb on lead guitar and the whole band really rocked. John looked well and was clearly enjoying himself.

Great stuff.  That's really good to hear that John's out there enjoying himself and looking well again.  Also glad that you enjoyed the show.

I went to see big John Illsley (as Phil Palmer described him tonight) at his last UK show. This was my second time and although he is no Mark Knopfler he is an excellent musician. His choice of music was something us MK fans can only dream of. He finished his set with Where Do you Think You're Going after nervously saying it's only the second time his band had played it. I can honestly say it was amazing and a pleasure to see John and Phil Palmer again.

Actually, Banjo, the set closed with 'The Bug'. But I agree with you, it was all done to a very high standard, and even if it was inevitably Hamlet without the Prince, the songs were done justice by a very tight band, though neither Phil Palmer nor the other guitarist Simon Johnson, attempted much in the way of MK's finger picking style. JI did about five of his own songs - all seemed well written and performed - plus Leonard Cohen's 'First We Take Manhattan'. And eleven DS songs, as follows:-

SoS, Where Do You Think You're Going, R&J, Expresso Love, PI, SFA, MfN, WoL (the inevitable opener), BiA, Calling Elvis and The Bug.

We weren't quite sure what to expect, and had a thoroughly good time. The girl singer added a new dimension to several classics. Recommended, if JI's band comes your way.

Just found out what happened to John Illsley via this Forum and I must admit that he was indeed very brave to keep this serious illness secret for so many years!!! Happy to see that he's ok now and touring again!! Wish him all the best for the future!!!
But it's written in the starlight and every line on your palm, we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms.

Yeah, 2015 is quite a good concert year already.
Jepp. 2xU2 as it is a saturday and sunday and the tickets were not so expensive.
The MK Tour is a bit strange this time. No nice venues and not on a weekend.
Exception Rome, but it is a tuesday and I have no time in July.
So this time only 2 times MK. But when the setlist is again the same as 2013 with 3 tracker tracks then it is ok for me.
