On the basis of my experiences from other forums, try avoid creating too many sub-forums and divisions. Trends come and go, and some sub-forums die rather quickly and some are perceived as the "central ones" by most posters.

I would suggest not creating too specific sub-forums.

True,

But for the guiter players and songlyrics 'talkers' at this forum it could be an real addition where nice topics can grow. Songs are a pretty important part of MK i think  ;)

But we already have a 'central' sub-forum, don't we? It's the one where I write now. I talk not about sub-forum with all the songs in a row. It's a sub-forum with all songs discussions in one place. So if you have something to say

Dutchessy, you're right. I think about way to separate music discussing and lyrics discussing. It's hard, but plausible.

Anyway, why we have Tour and individual albums topics (which quite popular, by the way), but didn't have Songs topic? Kinda strange.

More of my thoughts:
1. Personally I never used AMIT like song meaning source before, though it seems to be the main place for discussing things like that. I go to songmeanings dot com instead and take nothing back, just couple of thoughts on couple of songs by somebody. I want amiters and my friends opinions, but I too shy to create another topic on another song, which will lost in deep thread of the main board anyway.
2. It's hard to use search, really. I tried it so many times with so many things, but never got the right result and it's time-consuming.
3. We discussed songs from Privateering, for example, but you can try to find this information in the main thread

I fully understand the way you put your arguments here, foma. Still I don't think it's necessary, please don't feel offended by it!  :wave But as I started the whole affair with the Tupelo thread, I feel I should give my everpresent opinion!   :P

We already have enough sections, some of them are not very useful anymore, but still stand fixed. I like it exactly the way it is: The Mark Knopfler Discussion forum, or the General Discussion forum as the main fields to discuss. Fixing some threads at the top is a good idea but should not be used too often.

Talking about the songs is a natural element of most of the posts at times. I am against too many sections. It could lead to isolated discussions. The open character is a very important part of AMIT.  If you cannot find something, just ask! Open a new thread! Someone will help you or pm you sooner than you think.

However, this is just my opinion. Please do as you like or as the majority likes. If there are many people wanting it, why not.

I miss some structure: There is a Privateering section and a Get Lucky section, but there are no sections for the other albums. I know that it is not easy. The advantage now, is that you start a thread in the section Mark Knopfler discussion and everybody reads it.. But after a while it isn't easy to find the thread anymore.

Too many sections are not good, I agree. But what will happen with the Get Lucky section? Is there some kind of archive when the new album appears? I think that a sort of an album section would be good. The actual and the last album is always a own section (like now) and the former albums are collected in a special album section. It wouldn't change a lot for those who follow the actual topics, and the problem starts for those who want to discuss older songs, because these discussiosn would be in the so called album sections. Advantage of the album section is that it works like an archive and that everybody would find the song thread by knowing the right album. I think the tour sections already work in that structure, don't they? But you guys do a fantastic job and you have build up a good working forum. And I don't know anything about these issues. For a forum the most important thing is comunication. The simple structure is a big advantage, maybe there is a solution for this issue without complicating the whole too much? if not, never change a running system!

I am definitely in favour of a more ordered structure so that information can be found more easily for each of the albums, not just for Privateering and Get Lucky.   I have recently been rearranging my own computer (a bit late in the day, I know!) so that each album has its own section for tour information, pictures, video clips, recordings etc and now it's really easy to find everything quickly, so I'm sure it will work here.

I am not really a person who dissects song lyrics - more the type who listens to the songs and lets them wash all over me, but I am very impressed by what I have been reading from you all and I look forward to learning more about the meaning in MK's lyrics!     ;)

I also have a suggestion as to how one might accomplish these discussions.  I participate on another forum about Mark - Silvertown Blues http://z7.invisionfree.com/Silvertown_Blues/index.php?.  It is arranged with sections for Dire Straits albums and Mark Knopfler albums, with threads for the individual songs and other things about the albums.  It is pretty easy to scroll through to see if the song and/or topic you want to discuss has already been added, or to add a new thread for discussion in more depth.  We always welcome new members, too  ;D, especially if they want to talk!   :lol

First time visited Silvertown_Blues site. Very impressed how each section is organized.   :)
